Hypothetical:

Rob "I think that amp X is way too expensive"

Marbles "I bought it and love it and think it money well spent.  Rob, if you think it's too expensive, don't buy it."

What's left to say?

Evidently a LOT considering the nearly 200 posts!

EDIT:  Obviously Rob Babcock is a much faster typist than I.

Do you think you have reason to believe my question was anything other than what I've described?

I wonder if perhaps you give me too much credit, or if maybe you're mistaking my words and/or actions for something they aren't.

God, no.  And I'm sorry if I implied that in any way.  Again, the medium of print leaves much more room for misunderstanding than face-to-face discussion, and there's no deeper explanation I can give.  I'm merely saying that a baffling 20 page exchange isn't bad in and of itself, even if you or I can't figure out why it has to occur.  Have we ever applied a "usefulness" litmus test to a discussion before?  If so, I'll be be back down to 2,000 posts again.

It's always more complex than "here's my stance in 15 words, give me yours in 20."  Many, many points were raised and responded to.  I thought it was a fascinating exploration of audio philosophy.

But admittedly, I don't get out much.

My take...after a few pages...it was the same old thing.

Prices high...then you don't buy...simple.

I think its Pat's fault..... :jester:

My question was honest: aside from jealousy, why would anyone bitch about how someone else spends their money?  It is not - nor was it intended to be - a thread-killing question.  I asked because I'm genuinely interested in trying to understand those who exercise the aforementioned right.

Now, here's some solid thinking...

I've seen people collect and be obsessed over so many different things, it's crazy.  I'm a middle class guy, but my ex-wives parents were very wealthy (they OWNED Weight Watchers...).  You want to talk about people that spent money on stuff!  Woo woo!

But as I got to know them, they were just as passionate and obsessed as many of us audio types were.

Really at the end of the day, they just have a couple more zeros on the end of their everything.  I try to keep my five thousand dollar car running, they have to keep their 200 thousand dollar car running, it's all relative.

And I know I've gotten warped a bit by being exposed to so much gear.  I had a mfr call me the other day and ask if we want to review their newest speaker.  When I asked "how much" and they said 10k, I thought "that's not too bad!!"

But then the UPS man rang the bell with a kit from RAW Acoustics and a really cool pair of $500 mini monitors!

Back down to Earth.....

Hmmm... no offense, Chris, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone quicker than you with the "Post" button, on this forum or any other.  :o

In short, you da man!  :thumb:

That's actually my take as well, Chris.  How many different ways can the same thing be said?  And just as things are starting to peeter off, someone new to the thread will make a post taking us right back to the beginning... again.

But to ensure there's no misunderstanding, my position was and continues to be that my question was honest.  I've made no attempt to kill the thread; in fact, the thought hadn't even crossed my mind until I read Rob's post.

Then again, maybe this little aside we're having will prove its death knell.  Now how ironic would THAT be?!?

My problem with some high (for me) priced amps is that as long as there are people willing to pay the asking price the manufacturer has no reason to lower the price so I can buy it.

Yep!  :D

It makes typing problematic (I keep hitting the wrong keys!), but it sure is nice to be reminded of how it feels to be pain free!  :thumb:

But as I said earlier, you can always wait for some impatient person to get sick and tired of them
so you can buy em on Audiogon....
