New video card
« on: 22 Sep 2007, 03:20 am »
Getting a free copy of Vista from a developers group meeting has finnally prompted me to get a new video card. Not really free is it?

I got a PNY brand nVidia GeForce 8800 GTS with 320MB. This is a great card for <$300 and is DX10.

Unfortunately it is a very tight fit in my case and I will have to move a 3.5" drive. It is a double wide card and requires 2 power connectors. It goes in my PCIe16 slot.

Formerly I used the embedded 6150 chip.

So far I have it runnuing in XP, Vista later tonight.

Very nice.  I recently bought a xfx branded one.  If you have the chance, return it and get the 640mb version.  It's really sad when you've spent $300 that you still can't play games with the highest resolution textures.  At least, I assume it's a ram related problem.  It's just choppy when I try to play Dark Messiah with high res textures.

Thanks - the card is working great, but haven't made all the changes to re-architect the box yet and put Vista on. A few more pressing matters and as always PCs take up more time than you anticipate.

Now I need a good PC-based game to push this DX10 card!

Not much out in DX10, yet.  I read that Bioshock essentially looks identical in dx9 vs dx10.  I saw it run on my friend's new 8800gts 640mb quad core system tonight, and it ran great.  Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is older, but it still has neat tricks in its engine.

Yeah I went for DX10 since I was upgrading from the embedded GeForce 6150. This card should cover me for a while, outputs to 2 monitors and handles everything you could want for Vista, plus the latest games. Plus it doesn't steal my system memory the way an embedded chip does.

Finally re-architected the components in the box today - see my new topic "New components = PC redesign"
