Question about rectifier tubes for the Cornet2
« on: 20 Sep 2007, 08:56 pm »
I have some big bottle 5Y3 Sylvania coke bottles that sound really good on my C2.  Has anyone tried a Brimar coke bottle 5ZG tube?

Is it a direct plug in for a C2?

Cheers!

You can plug almost any octal rectifier into the C2.  Just make it doesn't draw much more than 2 amps heater current.  Some work better than others.  For nominal design voltages, use a 5AR4 or GZ34.  The current production sovtek 5Y3 is very close to these (it is also indirectly heated), which is what I started with.

Jim thanks for the personal email!  I will use your directions to hunt down the hum.  Right now the C2 is nearly silent.  I will remove the on off switch and go from the IEC to the board directly and see if it gets rid of the slight trace I am hearing.

I will get some TI shield from Percy audio if I need to get the switches shielded from the transformer.

I will plug in the 5ZG and see how it measures.  I am running the Sovtec right now.
