Bugle question
« on: 19 Sep 2007, 05:27 pm »
I have a Bugle running on Panasonic sealed lead acid batteries, 12V 1.3ah.  I've had the units about 18 months.  I usually deep cycle the batteries, they get somewhere around 20 hrs to full discharge.

Lately (last few months), when I switch the Bugle on, it takes 3-4 minutes for it to power up.  Silence for about two minutes, then it 'ripples' for a minute or two and finally the signal gets fully through.  This is the case whether the batteries are fully charged or partly discharged.

Did I cause this by deep cycling the batteries?  i.e. they aren't up to snuff anymore?  Or could it be something else.

That's really wierd.  The BUGLE will probably run fine on +/-5V.  I can't imagine what keeps it from powering on.  It should turn on virtually instantaneously.  Have you measured battery voltage?

Just measured the batteries, 12.6 and 13V.  So they are ok.  I wonder if it could be a reeeeeeaaly weak solder joint on one of the caps, or more likely one of the opamps?  (the issue is in both channels)

But if that were the case you'd think I'd have more frequent intermittent cutouts.  I get the odd burp but it happens so rarely I've never given it a second thought.

Btw, the Bugle sounds excellent...I've been very pleased with it.  I may go ahead and spring for the power supply, and go over all my solder joints at that time.
