What I PAID or what it would cost new?  Much of mine was purchased 2nd hand.

I used what I paid.

Not that it changes which category I would select.   aa

I think the above $20k choice is too broad so I would add a few more choices.

Sure, $20k is a stack of cash but it's not near as "committed" as $100k and both end up in the same category.

Question: "What is the total spent on your Main Audio System?"

Answer: "Enough to have "Excellence", but spent it in the wrong areas on the wrong components"

So far it's looking like about 32% of the population here on ac is in the $5-10K range with a total of 44% in the $1-10K range so I would have to guess that about 44% of ac people are somewhat sane!!  :thumb: Unfortunately I wouldn't be included in that group..... :slap:

I didn't use any cost ratios to budjet my system. I bought what I thought sounded best together. I will say that my 2 front speakers and front power amp tallied $8,000.  :o NUTS? Maybe. But then when I use my main system for CD listening.....then I don't feel so bad. It was also a slow upgrade process so the big bill didn't come all at once. I really don't know too many that went to an audio salon and laid out 10K in a day. I woundn't do that with your money.

I actually have more than $20k in equipment I don't even use! That's if it was bought new which it wasn't. But it's still kind of messed up to think about. Man, I have to have a house cleaning sale. :(

Ouch! I think the beginning, when you start purchasing the higher ticketed items, there is a definite learning curve to getting the best results. Or maybe its a trial, try try try again kind of thing. Not sure YET.

the retail price of my present speakers & amp, (w/o subwoofer system considered), is ~$15k. i spent a bit less than $4k.  the rest of my system, (and the rest of my gear presently sitting idle), was purchased pretty-much the same way.  the only stuff i purchased new were my vmps larger subs, & marchand xm9 x-over.  i got a decent deal on these, &, after much research, determined that nothing i could purchase, even used, (except vmps & marchand) would offer the same level of sonic quality.  even if i were to diy, i couldn't have done better at the time.  and, when i purchased them, (>10 years ago), i would have had to wait a long time to have found them on the used market.

My current system is downright cheap by AC standards - under $3k even if you include the cost of the PC which is my source.  Of course, all the money I spent in aborted experiments before arriving at this arrangement is another story.......

JMO but a better question would be do you feel you're getting your money's worth from your audio system. My system's going on 4 years old now and I still get goosebumps everytime I crack up the tunes. For me, it's not about the money as much as it is the enjoyment I get from the music. But just to stay on topic,,,,, $15-$20K plus $3K in the closet and in ripoff mods. All I buy nowdays is albums,,,, lots & lots of albums. Last count= 2696 albums (put a pricetag on that) LOL

  • The elephant normally IS the room

And while we're fixating on equipment, what about the room?

We built a new house 2 years ago and I got a "man cave" out of the deal.  As we were finishing the  basement anyway (for energy efficiency and a 4th bedroom) the room was a freebie (wiring and wall insulation were already included).  What little extra I invested was easily recouped from wifey not filling it with "extra" stuff that would have gone into storage.

Anyway the room is properly proportioned 1 x 1.61 x 2.61 (8 ft x 13 ft x 21 ft), has staggered double stud interior walls, insulated fiberglass exterior door with weather seals, insulated flex duct for supply air, and three dedicated circuits for audio with cryo'd hospital grade Hubbell receptacles.  The whole house is wired with 12 gauge, 20 amp circuits.  All appliances are new and we have our own transformer thanks to a long underground power feed.

Naturally the biggest advantages are:

1. No WAF
2. Sound insulated, both me from them and they from me (almost spooky at first)
3. Can listen when I want at pretty much the spl I want (high or low)
4. Have both nearfield setup for critical listening and nice farfield setup while computing
5. Of course, it sounds great in here

Previously I had a well similarly sized room, but didn't have advantages #2, 3, and 4, so I had to wait for the house to empty to really listen.  I'm amazed at all the examples you can read about of "serious" money invested for equipment that go into crummy rooms and/or speaker/listening position setups.  That is what headphones are for (which is what I did in college).
