op amps the wrong way around
« on: 15 Sep 2007, 10:21 am »
Hello
Can anyone tell me what happens if you put op amps into a dac the wrong way around, does it just destroy the op amps or can it cause more damage, thats right I have just done it and their seems to be a strong electrical burning smell coming from the dac

Usually it just destroys the op-amp.  The supporting circuitry should be fine, assuming it was designed properly  to begin with.   When a chip such as an op-amp burns up, the supply voltage (usually +/- 15V) may appear on pins that it otherwise would not have.  This is where it can affect supporting circuitry.  But in general circuitry is  usually protected up to the supply rails through limiting impedance or, clamping techniques.

If you smelled a strong burning smell, I doubt everything is fine. I'd replace and/or test at least the opamps.  You may also want to see if the limiting circuitry is toast (usually, pullup or pulldown resistors/caps).
