Off the grid phonostage
« on: 14 Sep 2007, 02:57 pm »
I am presently using the tape out from a classic
Harmon Kardon Integrated as a phonostage.  It
sounds better than you might expect, but I am
going to look for something that is more compact
and can take low output cartridges.  I am wondering
if anyone is using an off-the-grid phonostage.  I
have a lot of vinyl and a decent turntable, but vinyl
is not my main source. I love the vinyl sound but
much of the music I am most interested in right now
is available only in digital.  So I do not want to
blow a lot of money, but what might I pick up
used  and that can perhaps be modified
without a major overhaul that would serve my needs.
  Thanks, Don

Hi Don,

I've had very good results running a Lehmann Audio Black Cube phonostage on SLA battery power.  It requires +/- 12V (two batteries).  The battery power supply was in a separate enclosure.

I have also taken the board out of the black cube and put it in a new enclosure with the batteries in the enclosure with the board.

I'm sure there are other phono stages can ca be ran off-the-grid.

Email me if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Vinnie
