IDEA for OB-5 heart transplant?
« on: 13 Sep 2007, 09:31 pm »
Danny,

I have been thinking about getting an OB-5 or OB-7 for a long time now. I don't have tools or space to build it myself. The cost was a little more than I wanted to spend to have Dayglo make it. And some folks that I have talked to about building just the cabinets have been closer, but finishing was an issue.

Now I see that AV123 is producing a similar speaker that you designed, and from the initial renderings it looks great and is very affordable...

I understand it uses different parts throughout -it is a different speaker.  But I am wondering, would it be possible to buy that speaker as is, (or without drivers/crossover) and replace drivers and crossovers with your OB-5 kit?  For the price of approx $699 at fully assembled this isn't much more than I have been quoted for an unfinished mdf cabinet! So adding replacement parts of OB-5 kit would bring it up to $1500 -which is a price point that would be very fair for the aesthetics and sound quality -if that would be compatible.  Better if AV123 could ship without internals at some kind of discount, but probably not worth their time and effort to do it that way as a one off.

-I don't really hold out much hope that it would actually work, but I thought I would ask!

TRADERXFAN,

We're doing a flat pack kit for the OB 7 for a customer in the U.S right now. All the fully machined MFD parts you need to assemble a pair of enclosures yourself. ( Kit includes a triple laminated, 3 layers of 3/8" front baffle). You just need glue and clamps to assemble the enclosures and glue on the baffles. With shipping to the customer's door, it was less than $500.00 U.S. We can also do the OB 5's.

You just need to assemble them, put a finish on them, drop the crossovers in, hook up the drivers, and you're done.

I'll even throw in a pair of our custom bases in MDF ready for finish.  :P

PM me if you're interested.

Cheers

Hey Daglow:

How much would LS 6 or 9 knock down kits cost, if you are doing them?

Thanks,

I will not be offering any knock down kits for the LS 6's or LS 9's.

Thanks Day.

Trader-you could also buy my OB-5s. I would let them go for $2,000.00. Did I say that?  :o  I love them so much I thought they would be lifers, to give to the kids one day.

TRADERXFAN,

Those parts won't swap over.

For one the X-Static uses larger 6.5" woofers, and then a soft dome tweeter. The woofers are similar to the M-130's used on the OB-5 and OB-7 just larger. The tweeter is no planar magnetic but it is easily one of the better sounding soft dome tweeters that I have worked with regardless of price.

That speaker (the X-Static) will raise the bar for any speaker under $1,000. a pair. That is an incredible speaker. I guarantee you it will win a ton of awards and it won't surprise me at all to see it on the cover of a major magazine before the end of 2008.

The parts quality is really good from the factory and even includes some Sonicap Gen.2 by-pass caps, but the network can be taken up a notch, and you could line the cabinets with No Rez... No doubt that the Skiing Ninja will offer a few upgrades to take them over the top.

Even after upgrades, I'd personally still favor the OB series because of the planar magnetic tweeter that they use, but you could easily go with the X-Static and not be disappointed at all.

TRADERXFAN, what city do you reside in?  Are you only interested in finished cabinets?  I can quote you a price on the open top version.  PM me if you are interested.
