Blast from the past: Remember these?
« on: 11 Sep 2007, 03:58 pm »
Anyone ever have a set of these old beauties?

The Advent 1's

I used to think they sounded so great (i was a kid)

Would love to hear a pair again...  Or would that be a good idea?  Like going back to Disneyland as an adult and thinking 'oh, it's smaller than i remember...'

Yeah baby.  I had two pair.

Blackmore here on AC still has a pair.  We listened to them last year with a couple different things he had around both tube and solid state.  While not the ultimate in accuracy, they were certainly still fun to listen to.

Yeah baby.  I had two pair.

Sweet!

Can someone please confirm that the 'tweeter' isn't a taillight from an old French car?  Just curious.

I bought a pair in '78, traded them in on a pair of Sansui SP-X6900's  in '79.

Those Advents were nice speakers for their day.

I had two pair of the Big Advents stacked. Kicked Butt on almost all speakers at the time.

I'm feeling very young at 44...never had or heard the famed Advents. You guys must be old  :icon_lol:

EPI's were the hot brand around me in my teens...remember those?  Epicure Products even was importing Thorens turntables back then, too, in the US.  Don't know if they (the speakers, that is) were sold down unda', Adam

The pairs I had were 1 in the utility cabinet and 1 pair in the nice furniture cabinets.

When I was in college, our apartment living room had stacked Advents in all 4 corners and a big honkin' Pioneer (I think - memory issues with those days.  ) Quadrophonic receiver.  Talk about rock-n-roll...

I still bring mine out from time to time.  Had the woofers refoamed.  I still want the GAS gang to have a college stereo night where we bring out the Advents, a Pioneer or Kenwood receiver and a Dual turntable and spin tunes we listened to in college.  Molly Hatchet, Montrose, Santana, Hendrix, etc.  I love how the old Advents sound.  You're not thinking about anything but the music and what memories you still have (Bryan?) when you first heard that song.  Wonderful :thumb:  Find a pair, spruce them up and have some fun.

Ah....the old Advent speakers....pretty good sound at a cheap price.
Even their "Baby Advent's" weren't bad. Many of the local record store's (in the 70's) used them.

I thought you have a big warehouse full of those goodies!  Those oldies (including the ARs) certainly have their virtues.  But, regardless, they're "dated."  The high-end sound of the 60's, 70's certainly are different from the 90's, or 000000's.  Time marches on.

I've only been in OZ for the last year.. Expatriate Canadian.  We got the Advents in '75?  I was a baby.

Very fond memories of listening to those Advents cranked - when my parents were gone! - to this record:

I'd say that's what got me into hifi right there.  That was the defining moment for me where i said to myself  "This is very cool"

Any of you guys remember the album that did if for you?

I have a pair of Maestros sitting in the garage ready for a throwdown and a pair of Baby II's (one of the best deals in hi-fi) that I use with my "travel" stereo.

They're fun.

I think I read somewhere that the original Advent was the best selling speaker of all time. Is that true? It wouldn't surprise me...
