Onkyo a-9555 (digital amp) vs. Jolida 302b (tubes)
« on: 11 Sep 2007, 02:20 pm »
I currently have a Jolida 302b and while I enjoy the tube sound I feel like I'm missing too much of the low end.  I don't currently have the budget to purchase a higher end tube amp so I've been looking for a replacement in the digital realm.  I own a Panasonic XR25 digital receiver which I have been pleased with.  I've read that the Onkyo a-9555 is a much better amp than the Panasonic.  I've also read that the Onkyo has a tube-like sound (though I realize it won't sound exactly the same).  For basically an even trade ($499 retail for the Onkyo vs. $500 used for the Jolida) do you guys think the Onkyo would be a good swap for the Jolida?  I also need a built-in phono section which the Onkyo has.

Anyone compare the two?

Thanks.

ps.  I know some of you will probably say keep the Jolida and mod it but I don't currently have the time or resources to do so.

I was interested in this amp as an upgrade for my Cambridge 640a V2 but have not found a retailer in my area that has it in stock for a demo. I know a lot of "audiophiles" who would scoff at the idea of trading a tube Jolida for an inexpensive Onkyo but I think that's mostly based on preconceived notions and not actual listening experience. I have yet to hear/read anything negative about the Onkyo except maybe that it lacks a bit of detail. But that could be said about a lot of expensive tube amps also.

Pretty much need to try and see for yourself how you like it in your setup. I'd pick the Jolida, but it sounds like the Onkyo may be a better match for you. Personally I use a solid state amp (class A/B Gemstone) and tube DAC. I prefer SS or hybrid (Butler for one) for amps and tubes for pres or sources.

I agree - the best setup I've owned so far was a tube pre-amp with a pure class "A" amp and electromagnetic speakers. However I know someone who's using a SS integrated as a pre with a tube amp and seems happy...
