Joe Zawinul Dies

This one hit me harder than most any other recently reported musical death for at least the last 2 years or so. He leaves a great legacy though:

A sad, sad day.

Yes....sad news Bob.

"A European from the heartland of the classical music tradition (Vienna) who learned to swing as freely as any American jazzer, and whose appetite for growth and change remains insatiable".

Zawinul was an excellent musician....just a few nights ago, I was "spinning" a few Weather Report albums. And his last with the WDR Big Band ..." Brown Street " is excellent.

His music will live on....forever.

I've been playing Mercy. Mercy Mercy (Cannonball Adderley, Mercy Mercy Mercy, Live At The Club) all day

Sorry to hear that. I had a chance to see Weather Report in the late 70's when Jaco was at his peak. One of the best concerts ever.

That still is my best concert ever. WR at the Trenton War Memorial Auditorium. I think it was the "8:30" tour. Not a word spoken to the audience.

Simply unbelievable that those 5 guys (also had Bobby Thomas, I think, on percussion) could pull off what they did live.

My buddy took some B+W pictures and I had color slide film in my camera that I was going to develop myself. I then spilled the developer as I was putting it into the tank - I remember crying about it as a junior in HS!

I've been hearing some of the Zawinul Syndicate Big Band stuff on XM and plan on picking some up. Wolfy, you're right about "Brown Street" - It rocks!

Pic from that WR show:

Bye Joe. Thank you for so much joy.

Me too.  Saw them with The Crusaders, back to back, at the old Front Row (theater in the round) in Cleveland.  Joe was the essence of cool, and Jaco was an out-of-body experience.

I'd like add a comment re YouTube in general  but it applies to Weather Report as follows:

We all know that Utube is great for watching talking cat videos etc., but have you ever searched for your favorite relatively obscure jazz artists there?

I found a bunch of Weather Report footage the other week. For those that didn't get a chance to see the boys in action, YouTube can at least give you a taste. Sonics very variable of course.

Wow...sad news indeed...a few months ago I missed the Zawinul Syndicate when they performed in NYC. Now I will never have that chance again.
At least I did catch Josef Zawinul solo performance at Carnegie Hall in the late 80's.
He will be missed...so long Joe.

I'll remember him for his solo on "Jive Samba" with The Cannonball Adderley Sextet.  Hard to believe a white boy from Europe could play this f-u-n-k-y.  The crowd on this live gig enthusiastically approves!

Wow! Very sad to hear he is gone.  How incredibly ironic that earlier today I was playing keyboard at the Trenton War Memorial with a jazz trio and the last tune I called was Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.  On 9-11 no less.  Joe must have been listening and smiling.  RIP Joe.  What an incredible gift.

Weather Report was a major force in opening my ears to jazz back when . Wow. How sad . Never ever heard them live but would have paid anything to be there. Never got the chance . Damn .
Cheers
