DIY 8" subwoofer design?
« on: 31 Aug 2003, 10:26 pm »
Greetings,
Does anyone have ideas/plans for building a subwoofer using 1 or 2 8" drivers?  The reason I ask is that I have 2 extra Audax HM210Z0 drivers that I was going to use for a speaker project, but I decided to go with slightly different drivers.  Now I want to find a use for these, or sell them if I cannot.

I did find plans for something called the KLS10 subwoofer, but it uses a dual voice coil driver, and mine are only single voice coil units.

Any ideas would be appreciated,

RDS

Hi Arctos

Here's a link to an interesting project using an MCM driver:

I'm not sure if your Audax drivers have similar parameters, but if so you could have a nice stereo sub pair for very reasonable change.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dayne!!,
I didn't think I would get a reply on this post.  The link you provided was very helpful and I will probably do something similar with my drivers.  The Audax drivers I have are much higher quality than the MCM drivers, so I would hope that my results will be pretty good.  I think the amps from Parts Express should work great as well.  My only concern is that the MCM is a dual voice coil driver and mine are not.  I think this is OK since I would run a stereo pair and not be running both channels of signal through either one.  I guess I would just not hook up one set of connections on each sub.

Hi Arctos

Glad I could help!  Have fun with your doublesubs and let us know how they turn out . . .

Arctos, do you have Unibox? Give it a shot. Depending on the application you might want to try an EBS type of alignment with those.

Thanks for the input John,
I have been using Unibox 3.1, and have toyed with designs with these drivers, but not an EBS till you mentioned it (had to look up EBS!).  My initial experimentation came up with a 67 liter cabinet with a 4" diameter, 9 3/4" length port tube.  Though large, this may be feasible.  I had hoped to keep them smaller, as they will be used in my small listening room (approx. 12' x 14'), but sound quality is the overriding factor.  When I finish my latest project (based on the KLS-9) I will probably try this.  They may be a nice option to use with my Tangband units.

You could perhaps build the KLS9 floorstanders with them?

No sure how they managed to get away with a 25l box for that KLS10 sub...

John,
Funny you mention the KLS9, that is exactly what I purchased these drivers for!!  The only reason I may not use these used drivers for the KLS9's (my current project) is that all of the other components I purchased for them are new.  I recently found out that the Audax HM210Z12 is so similar to what I have now that I will probably buy a new pair of them for this project.  So, now I have these extras.
