Vinyl compared to iMod
« on: 5 Sep 2007, 05:01 am »
Hello -
Am considering an iMod and am curious to know how people feel it compares to a good entry turntable (~$400)... I understand the convenience of the iMod is amazing...
Thank you,
Mike

The Imod is more compact, convenient and portable. The turntable will probably enjoy a longer lifespan.
As for sound, it will all boil down to your preferences and requirements.
At this stage of the game, I would buy the Imod. At $400, you don't get much analog and the idea of getting started with good quality vinyl is a bit daunting when compared against the cost and convenience of downloading.
However, if you must have a turntable, I have just the thing for you. PM me, if interested.

I think a huge point of difference is quality/fragility of source material. (Assuming you have a high quality recording to begin with) It is sometimes difficult and/or costly to find a good condition vinyl copy, and if you're not diligent in care/playback, it will degrade over time. With the iMod, you can grab the file from a CD or a high quality download service and it will sound exactly the same, time after time, as long as you care to listen. I find it much easier (personally) to find used CDs for cheap rather than good quality vinyl. Different types of music will differ, and whether or not you live in a big city can affect that too.

Hey!

Honestly I don't know because I've never have both side by side in my system. :?

Anyway, I have to disclose that I don't have iMod or even iPod but I do have turntable. :D This question is almost like Digital vs Analog thing. And to make this harder to answer is the fact that this is in Re Wine Audio's circle. :?

But here's go... Vinyl take some effort, not just getting up to flip the LP but also seeking out those albums new or old on vinyl.  But I see that you've already sold on the convenience and portability of the iMod. And not all of the new albums are on vinyl.... although there are more than you might think.

If you already have a good amount of vinyls stacked some where in your home than there is no reason not to get a turntable. For $400 you could pick up a nice used Rega Planar 2 or even P2. But to start from scratch well that will take some time and effort for sure.

For me I'm very happy that I got into vinyl back in the mid '90s and have been happily spinning vinyls ever since

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:
