Marbles

they all ready have the decoding for the hi-def formats.

take a look at them dts-hd and dolby-hd.

no one using it yet, but some day they will.

You know the saying " All good things in all good time"

Good saying.  There are lots of us using the new audio codecs.  BTW, those you list are only the better lossy ones; the lossless ones are called Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio (or MA for short).  Not all processors decode all, and not all players decode all or even send all out via bitstream.  It's somewhat of an acronym soup out there, with too many standards, but it's getting better.  The decoded TRueHD, DTS-MA and the uncompreesed PCM coming from BD and HD software is truly music-lover quality.

After doing some research, I just ordered the Onkyo 905 receiver.  I should get it in one week.

I pre-ordered the Pioneer Elite 95 Blu-Ray player.

Both will upconvert standard def material to 1080P...well 1080i for my old set

The Onkyo runs a tad hotter than most receivers but it uses an HQv Reon processor which is supposed to be superior to the farujda (sp?).  It also uses a large toroid transformer in the amp section.  No other ones in this price class ($1600 MSRP) have this.

Cool ... Let us know how it goes.
I always thought that the onkyo receiver were quite warm sounding.

My 6 year old Sony STR DA777ES is getting real old, but still works great. I want to replace it, but haven't come across any receiver that is close to its audio quality.

Marbles,

i think the one down from the 905, the 875 has the same Reon chip set.

also i think the screen door effect has been corrected on the Farujda.

anyway good luck on your purchase and let us know what you think.

I have to agree with the ATI amp as I have an 1805 hooked up to my Meridian 568.2 and like another poster said I would still prefer a older Meridian 568 to a newer receiver... the implementation of powersupplies and processing in the Meridian surround modes are all you need, and DTS in from HD source is basically full range so unless you have 7.1 full range speakers you won't be missing anything.

Chris

I think Dave's suggestion is what I'd do, but I might even use the receiver's amp on the rears and just use external for the front three.

That's what I do.   :thumb:
