Does anyone have first hand experience with this preamp? I have someone offering me one in partial trade for my Dodd Reference preamp. Any info would be appreciated.

Joe at JamNAudio carries it and listens to it extensively in his system.  Joe's a good guy to talk to as well... 8)

Hey Gongos,

Give me a call or email me. It's important to know what version of the preamp you've been offered. The unit has undergone some major changes over the last year including going from a manual unit to one that's controlled by remote.

I'll answer any questions I can for you.

Hey gongos,

I apologize for being so late to the party, but I'm interested in knowing what you decided on the H-Cat.

After hearing one at Steve Chang's, I can better understand the almost cult-like following they have on Audiogon.

I'd have asked sooner, but I didn't remember your inquiry until I ran a search.

Thanks.

Decided against it. Didn't know--hear--enough about it, and the price was too high. Sounds like you were impressed.

Yes, I was.  Much more so than I'd anticipated.

I don't know how significant a role the H-Cat played in what we heard, but I have no doubt it's an exceptional pre-.  The presentation that evening left everyone slack-jawed, except for maybe Bob and Jason.  They had an inkling of what to expect, but things were way better than I'd anticipated.

Point being, the incredible sound we all hear that night wouldn't have been possible if the H-Cat weren't up to the task.

I never thought I'd sell my Butler Monads, but I'm giving them up so I can buy the new Spectron Musician III Signature Edition.  Along those same lines, I'd almost given up hope of hearing a preamp that wouldn't detract from what I'm used to hearing, but the H-Cat is at the top of my list for a home audition now.  It was that good IMHO.

Anyone know if these things are balanced or SE only?  I have yet to find a pic of the back or a description of the connector types, just that it has 4 inputs.
