I am interested in upgrading the crossovers and adding no rez in my RS450s as well.

If I have them all torn apart, would it be possible to upgrade the drivers as well? Would the crossover need a re-design with a set of different drivers?

If you change out the drivers you would need an entirely different crossover.  At that point, you would probably be better off selling the 450s and buying something different.

Thats what I figured...but I thought I'd ask anyway.

What are bypass capacitors?
How are they wired into the crossovers?
What do they do electrically?
What do they do audibly?
Can they be added to any speaker's crossover?

What are bypass capacitors?

Small value, typically fast discharge caps.

How are they wired into the crossovers?

They parallel the existing cap.

What do they do electrically?

They short the larger value and increase its discharge rate.

What do they do audibly?

Reduce smearing, allow one to hear more space between notes. Cleaner overall. Lower noise levels.

Yes.

If you want to really hear things open up try bypassing the tweeter caps with .1uF Teflons. The Solicap Platinums are really nice for this, if a little expensive. I've done the same with the far less expensive Russian teflon's that are selling on E-Bay and had great results.

Enjoy,
Bob

I'm thinking of upgrading some old Mission Argonaut speakers.  I know just enough to know that I can't just throw new parts into the cabinets.  Rebuilding the crossovers with modern, top quality parts will likely be a help and probably not hurt anything.  When I get to it, I'll have an order for GR-Research for resistors, capacitors, and maybe inductors if I can I.D. these.
