Charlie,

Vinyl is very, very frustrating...yet another nail in it's eventual

coffin. But those that bear with the pain and planning of it, and do a few thigns to further the experience, will get a musical performance like no other format can do.

But, getting to that point is quite the bother. If it hadn't been for vinyl, I don't think I'd call myself an audiophool and would have packed my bags and left a couple years ago. If it weren't for Grado, I'm not sure even the vinyl re-education and re-admission would have been worth it for me.

Vinyl takes efforts, as do the Grado's to milk them for what they are worth...but, once you do, the results are glorious.

I've got a very knowledgable vinyl buddy that thinks that the Stanton 500-series is the best budget cartridge ever made for $50. So, you might well be enjoying that Stanton T90 quite a bit with it on it. I've yet to hear that cartridge, but hope to one day (they cost like $35 or so)

Watch out, Charlie. Some time back, when I was convinced that the little silver discs were going to be the only answer to having music I embarked on transferring my record collection from vinyl. It's easy, and can be done pretty well with the right software and patience. You can even eliminate those clicks and pops that thorough record cleaning can't get rid of. What you want to be careful of is what you learn about analog vs. digital in the process. I never got rid of the records I'd transferred so carefully, and I quit the transfer process. I upgraded my analog front end and have since been buying vinyl - new and used - at about four of five times the rate of CD's. Sure, it's frustrating, cleaning, tweaking, etc. But there's nothing quite so good as the music that comes through an analog system - even when your ears, like mine are about 70 years old.

So far I'm very happy with the playback results I'm getting through the Stanton. Me and the computer are enemies. I always seem to get things screwed up when I try something like transferring vinyl to itunes or something like that. No big deal I can do without that but it is real convenient when I listen to tunes through my SB3 setup. Just let her play for hours on end. Don't have to get off my ass unless I need another martini.

My phono pre is a cheapo I bought on ebay. I'm looking at a Cambridge audio 640P phono pre. Got some very good reviews. Have you heard about this one my son? Or any suggestions?

According to some guys from another forum, whose opinions I respect, the 640 P is, like a lot of Cambridge gear, a very good value. I've never heard one, myself. My favorite, these days is the Bellari Tube phono pre at about $250. My Musical Fidelity pre cost about twice that and if I hadn't had it before I heard the Bellari, I'd have the Bellari.

Watch out, though. Once you've taken that first step on the slippery slope, the upgrades can go on and on.

I too have read that the Bellari is very good. However about once a week there is one for sale on Audiogon.
That kind of tells me that the Bellari isn't all it's cracked up to be. Guys try it and don't like it so off to Audiogon it goes.

Could be you're right. The only one I've heard has been in my friend's system for about six months now and he's still happy with it. If they're having a quality control problem, his came through all right, or so it seems. All I can personally attest to is that the one I heard sounded very good for about an hour.

I'm a little surprized, however, that you're seeing so much resale activity on Audiogon. Wonder who the selling dealers were? My favorite source, Music Direct here in Chicago has a thirty day no questions asked return policy as do other reputable dealers. Returns for full credit have to be a better deal than a resale if you wind up being unhappy.

I've done deals with Music Direct and have been happy with the products they sell and their customer service. But that still doesn't explain about all the Bellari's getting on Audiogon. Maybe just maybe the Bellari's aren't a good match in some systems. I've been down that road.

Right now I'm pleased with what I'm hearing so I think I'll wait until after the first of the year before I try any upgrades to the turntable cartridge or phono preamp.
