Looking For Questions...Not Answers

Hello Rob...

I thought I'd get a jump on things...hope you don't mind.
Trying to lay some ground work one week early...

I'm looking for questions....questions that a new person to audio might be seeking answers to. We all started somewhere....and we did have questions...I hope with everyones help on AC we can find the audio answers. Then....a good use for a sticky once we have the answer....which may or maybe right...hopefully it is right.

There's many years of audio experience here, and a very good group of men...and maybe women....lets put it to good use helping others who are new to this hobby.

Thank you all for you help....past, present, and (a bright) future.

Congrats on the new "job"!

I can't see anybody else with more patience and kindness to help newcomers feel at home in the audiophile world and here at AC.

Don't remember my first question, but if I were to start now, I guess I would have two:
(1) Where to spend bulk of the money budgeted for audio - music or hardware?
(2) What should be the most expensive component in my system?

Congratulations Chris!

I put together different two systems this last year for friends, the biggest question was "How much will it cost?"

Most newbs will be amazed what a 2 channel stereo can cost. With all the collective knowledge at AC we could come up with list of known good equipment we have owned in a few price categories, hopefully all the site sponsors would get recommended at least once.

Of course the mod would pick what is and what is not included.

I'd take this one step further and suggest we recommend complete systems at different price points. What's a good $500 or $1000 or $2000 system? At these modest (by today's standards) price points, synergy is critical. I've heard too many systems put together of components that don't work well together. So why not have a list of best sound for your dollar list?

I think what would have helped me most is a classification of different speaker types, their price ranges and characteristics, and what type of equipment works best with a certain speaker catagory. You'd have to decide how complicated to get, but general catagories like 1.High Effeciency Speakers with Subcatagories: Single Driver, Horn... 2.Electrostatics 3.Monitors 4.etc...

How about dealing with some really basic speaker-related issues. What are the various driver/transducer technologies? Generally, what are the relative strengths and weaknesses of these technologies? What special amplification needs do these technologies have? What about the variety of approaches to cabinet design? That sort of thing.

How about the fundamental bits and bobs (equipment) associated with vinyl playback and their roles?

eg. Why would one need a stepper? /The advantage of an external preamp. /Cartridge types and characteristics.

Hey!

Chris, congratulation on the new job here.

But I thought that you are going start a "Beer Circle" and "Speaker Modeling Circle" and moderate them?

You know when I first got interested in audio I remembered that I was asking questions like...

1.How many watts do I need for my speaker.

2.Will this amp work with my speaker?... and vice versa.

3.Will this amp/receiver work with 4 ohm speaker?

Of course over the years I've learn a lot and to me paring the amp with the right pair of speaker and vice versa is one of the most important thing to do in audio... it could pretty much make it or break it kind of thing.

For example you could have the best 300B SET amp in the world and use it with the best speaker in world but with 85dB sensitivity and wild impedance swing up and down... now that won't get you much isn't it?
