I was donig some research on the latest pre/pros at www.avsforum.com and made a post about the sonic advantages of an aftermarket pc on a decent amp a while back.
That post quicly brought out the scientist dbt audio engineer types as saying that all wire is the same ect, and that aftermarket wiring is a scam ect.

Now, I have been reading there latest scientest wanna be thread titled "All amps sound the same"

You will also find whithin this thread, opinions on all digital sounds the same, and a Pioneer receiver sounds exactly like a 10k amp in dbt testing....blah blah blah.

I see these types pop up on A-gon ans AA once in a while but I believe i found the nest...so to speak.
Anyone that feels like doing a little exterminating?.....lol

Don't tell me you're surprised?

These are market rather than sound quality driven forums, heck, the Internet is swarming with them.

I believe in measurements, but then, just because we don't know how to measure something doesn't mean it's not there. 30 years ago, nobody knew there was anthing like transient intermodulation (TIM), then one guy came along, said what it was, showed how it could be measured and identified, and we all ended up with better sounding amps. So it goes on and on.

But at the same time, he showed that those who kept saying something was not right were in fact right. So ears should not be discounted, nor made to hear the way we measure, rather the opposite - follow the ears towards better measurements.

This is what most tech types fail to realize.

I do not believe in dbt as a science, but rather entertainment as there are way too many variables involved.
As far as measurements go, some of the most sought after tube gear measures terrible by scientific standards, but yet sounds fantastic.

There is only one measuring tool required for sonics, that being our ears imho.


And yes, I am suprised to find that many that belive that everything sounds the same, on any one board.

All amps sound the same   Obviously someone who's spent too much time in their head analyzing the graphs generated by their measuring devices, and not enough time enjoying the music, with what mother nature put on either side of their head.

Not at all, John. I must admit I thought you'd agree, because the above post is reasonably in line with what you have said in your own several times.

You wouldn't happen to have a leftover JC preamp from way back in the seventies lying around the attic or cellar, would you? Slightly soiled is fine ...

That was the very first piece of audio gear which made my jaw drop in those days of wonder, and I wasn't bad off myself, what with ReVox, Uher, Dual, AR and Ortofon gear. I wanted it then, I want it now, and come what may, I'll keep wanting it until I either find it, or move on to the next world, whichever comes first. Just like I'll keep on searching for a JBL 4312 monitor.

I know this is not reason, this is my heart speaking, but hey, I don't drink, I don't gamble, I don't womenize, but I'm still human, I need to have my own quirks.
