In my setup, Subwoofer + Hard floor + Spikes = No bass

Well, not exactly no bass, but a whole lot less.  I figured I'd give the spikes on my Zu Minimethod a try just to see if they would tighten things up or what (before I had on just rounded metal feet), so I put them on and put my sub back in its normal place and cued up various tracks that I know have some clean bass on them.  Maybe this is old news to people, but to my surprise, the bass that was usually full and powerful was now anemic and weak; I turned the sub's level up all the way and it still didn't even begin to pressurize the room, even with the volume turned up!  Keep in mind, this is all in a small room, but I think the key factor here must be that I have no carpeting and thereby probably no need for spikes, and I also have a thin layer of wood resting directly on a concrete floor, so the foundation in my room is pretty much rock solid.

I switched back to the regular rounded off metal feet and instantly, the bass returned to its normal full self.  I thought this was an interesting outcome that I personally wasn't expecting, I never knew footers could impact the sound this much, but I just thought I'd post my findings here for anyone interested, I imagine I'm not the first to find this out...

Just curious...can you take measurements?

I am not doubting what you are saying, but the bass area can play tricks on us.

What might seem like anemic, could actually be more accurate and correct (not necessarily "better") or vice versa.

I have played around with spikes vs. decoupling on a concrete floor and have found that the spikes performed better with my various speakers and subs - YMMV.

Unfortunately I don't have a SPL meter otherwise I would.  I might get one sometime in the future, but for now, its all by ear.  When I had the spikes on, the bass did still seem pretty accurate, but the fact that even with the level volume up all the way, it couldn't even pressurize my 12' x 15' room with Bob Marley playing was curious to me, seeing as it can do it so easily without spikes...I might retry the experiment again later in the week just to confirm, I took the spikes off after a few tracks because I wanted to make my subwoofer was still working!

The only thing I can guess with ZU is that when I had the Druids in for review,
the gap between the floor and the speaker was supposed to be the thickness of
2 or 3 (can't remember now) CD cases.  The spikes were supplied for carpeted
floors to sink into and maintain that height.

When I spiked em on my concrete floor I had the same issue, it raised the speakers
too far off the ground!  It was part of the tuning.

You might want to call or email Zu tomorrow and see if this is also the case
for your woofer....

I wouldn't be surprised!

Thats my 2 cents worth!
