Re: ThreadJack: Acoustat 2+2s

Hey gjs_cds,

What are the 2+2's? I've been out of the action until recently for a long time. I heard Acoustats the were powered by built in Threshold amps I think, a long time ago.

Sorry for going off topic.

The 2+2s are full-range electrostatic speakers, and mine have the latest Medallion (C) transformer upgrade.  (The boxes behind each speaker is a transformer, not an amp.)  They're not self-powered, are remarkably inefficient, and (I believe) have a nominal impedance of under 4 ohms.  (They require a lot of wattage / current, as do all full-range electrostats.)  So as you can see--AVA HiFi's HC amps are a great choice for the loudspeaker.

The company was sold during the late 80s and then again in the 90s, then again to an Italian company--where it finally went under.  (Although a Chinese co. has recently purchased the name and the designs, so there may be life in the brand nonetheless.)

Each speaker is approximately 3 feet wide by 8 feet tall and around an inch thick.  Electrostatics are dipolar in nature, and with an approximate 16 square feet of radiating space per speaker--they offer remarkable resolution and quite a soundstage.

The early Acoustat X was powered by an OTL tube amplifier and they were pretty sweet, but the 2+2's are
a fantastic speaker!!  Had some myself many years ago (and 2's and 2's and 1+1's...) and really enjoyed
them a lot.  If you can find a pair now in good shape they are a killer bargain!

Where is ricmon?

I want to know the outcome of the preamp. I hope your not mad. We just don't want you to blow your amps or ears up. How about another set of speakers, like some JBL professional PA monitors when you have the need to test Frank's amp. Save the "good" speakers for critical listening? When I was young, I had a Marantz 3300 preamp with a 250 power amp. That was pretty good stuff for the time (1972). My speakers were JBL-L100's. That was about it. I too, had the itchy finger on the volume control. Christ, I blew up a pair of AR-5's for God's sake. That couldn't be done. I wanted to hear my system at concert levels. So, I bi-amped the L-100's and used a Dynaco Stereo 120 on the mid-range and tweeter. Lucky for me the gain of the 2 amps was close and the JBL's seemed to go to that..I call it the 5th level. When a song was over, your ears kind of tingled, like at a concert. I guess I just grew out of cranking it like that. I will push my Martin-Logans to a high level, but they can take the power as well.

Rock on you crazy dude!

Sent the preamp to Frank today (I'm not mad any more and Frank is still my man).  I'm glad this thread did not degenerate into bashing AVA.  I look forward to getting it back and resume music listening. ASAP

Thanks for the offer Doug.  Fortunately I have an old B&K preamp I'm using until the TR7 is returned.  The cool thing is this.  The B&W has a passive feature so it's giving me an unique opportunity to truly listen to the Ultra 550.  This is probably best expressed in another thread.  But the abilities of this amp are truly impressive.

no problem, ric, glad you're covered.  what i have that i coulda loaned out is a creek obh-12 passive w/remote, & an audio alchemy dlc digital remote preamp...

the creek is pretty transparent, but i prefer an active (tubed) pre - i have used the creek mostly between my tubed pre & two tunas, so i can a-b...   :D
