Balanced conversion with Lundahl transformer
« on: 19 Aug 2007, 09:56 am »
Hi
I have a Musical Fidelity preamp ( CD Pre-24) with un-balanced output,  however I will connect it to my Brystons amp with this Lundahl XLR inline transformer

http://www.lundahl.se/pdfs/datash/1584_x.pdf

•   Anybody with experience with this transformer?
•   Will this method alter the sound in any way?

I converted the output of one of my tube preamps to balanced using a LL1676. I didn't need a balanced out but wanted the ability to switch phase on single ended outputs. I lost about 6 db gain. Kevin, at K and K is a wealth of info on Lundahl transformers. He has a forum at the audio asylum dedicated to such applications. Go to the asylum home page and select the K and K forum listed on the left

You might want to compare it to the Jensen DM2 output transformer: http://www.jensen-transformers.com/dm2xx.html

I use the DM2-2RX to convert the unbalanced outputs of my Arcam CD player to balanced for connection to my Bryston BP26.

Thanks - interesting information. Lundahl is easily available here in Norway and the cost is approximately 400$

CD Pre-24 from Musical Fidelity use NE5532 as line drivers. When these op-amps drives a 600-ohm XLR trafo it will maybe alter the sound. A bit warmer, not so neutral?
