Got auto-return??

There's a post on Audio Asylum that assumes most TT's have auto-return.
It comes from someone quite lacking in TT knowledge and who owns a TT which is modest (at best [Japanese plastic]), so he's just extrapolating from his own situation.

I'd like to say "No high-end TT has auto-return" but is that true??
Or are there members who have TT's that, while maybe not high-end, are
good-enough tables that DO have auto-return?

I have a Teres that does NOT have a return, although the motor will shut off after 45 minutes.

I have a 30 year old or so Sansui that WAS higher end at the time, but is not know. It does not have auto return, but it does have an auto lift/auto off. You can set the auto lift/auto off to work or not if you think it effects the sound.

Maybe part of the issue is what's expected by consumers??? Modern TT's seem to eschew convenience functions (my Nottingham does), but some of the vintage gear felt "obligated" to include auto functions that some consumers demanded (or were trained to demand).

Seems somewhat analagous (but reversed) to remote functions with high-end gear: once remote functions were considered verboten compromises to pure sonics, but now they're included in some of the best stuff (my preamp has remote volume/mute that I don't think I could live without).

I didn't know that about the Teres motor....haha. That's kinda cool.

BTW, I just ordered my platter, the last piece to finishing my long awaited Teres project. When it comes I just need to set it up and start spinning.

I haven't done the finishing work yet, meaning the looks part, just finished the working part. I will likely do the finishing work later....I have a really good idea that shouldn't be too hard to do, not any harder than what I already have done.

I have two turntables in use, although neither of them are considered hi-end. One is a Studer Revox, which is "auto-return/auto-off". The other is a Basis, which is "auto-nothing".

So, my two votes would cancel each other out.

I was surprised that you consider Basis less than high end. I'm not familiar with the Studer TT, but would think it aspires to similar status.
Perhaps you're defining high end differently??

Just a wild guess, but the Studer Revox is the older TT (i.e. back when convenience features were more expected??)

this is what i use (well, actually, i use a similar ~25-yr-old thorens iteration) to lift off the tonearm at the end of the record w/my 100% manual oracle delphi:

i don't care how long the platter spins after the record is finished, so long as the stylus ain't in the groove!

the tonearm itself triggers the lifting bar.

likely won't work w/unconventional arms such as shown below, but will work w/most other arms.

Josh,
there's a Rube Goldberg version that involves a squirrel cage, a mouse, marbles (small "m") and a kite--it's much more fun to watch, but its performance can vary, depending on how hungry the mouse is.

tonto, that is too stinkin funny! and Doug, thanks for that link..I'm definitely going to invest in one of those when I get my TT done...Josh, hang in there your aluminum tubes will be on their way soon. The machinist dude is still flaking on my platter so I havent been over there. I suppose I should go harass him tomorrow.

BTW, the Audio-Technica tonearm lift is being auctioned

Interestingly (?) it's called the "Safety Raiser"--which is a sorta joke on the term "safety raZOR", what we all now consider a normal Gillette/Schick razor where our faces are protected from the blade.
