What would be your process to evaluate power cords?
« on: 16 Aug 2007, 03:24 pm »
I have never tried to do this but I am guilty of owning 4 specialty PC's that I am not sure what do with.  They are "randomly" placed right now.

If anyone knows the characteristics of these already and where they like to play, please chime in.

I have:

Bogdan Ghost
Black Sand Violet
Black Sand Silver Ref MKIV (name correct?)
Virtual dynamics Power-ONE 7ft. power cord (zero time on this, brand new)

Now I only have 3 units requiring power - amp, CDP, and surge box.  Presently using a passive pre.  So when the music stops, ha ha, one cable will be sitting out for sure.

Does anyone have a systematic process for evaluating PC's and what I should listen for?

You don't know what you are getting into.  I will save you.  Just PM me for my address and give me a Black Sand PC.  My payment will be the relief you will be getting from the headache you surely will get from trying to do what you are planning.  Sounds fair?

Is it as hot a potato as evaluating IC's and SC's?  Always have to dodge that darn DBT dart that gets thrown around!

List them according to price, as we all know the most expensive one has to sound better so its a simple issue to sell the cheapest.  Then find a buyer who would find your cheapest PC his/her most expensive - everyone's happy!

Seriously, the combinations and permutations are too much too deal with - I would start with isolating the PC's down to optimized application.  Start with the PC's that are recommend for amps and keep the source PC constant, once you've found the one you like best in your amp then work upstream with your other components keeping the amp PC as the constant.  This should simplify the process and help speed up the process.

Just plug them in and open a beer. Surely you have more important things to think about.

Very true.  I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something with the array of cables I have and perhaps somebody's knowledge about them.  Up to this point I couldn't tell you which was where in the system.  Secondguessing myself on whether I should do a more indepth assessment.

I would stick each to your toungue and measure how many seizure to how many volts you experience. If you make it through you will not remember what a PC is, but you will be a better man for it.

I personally would use my Multimeter to check continuity and if everything was in order, then Ohm out the legs just to make sure there weren't any frayed wires internally. I do believe in shielding and the use of ferrites, but that's pretty much it aside from clean contacts.
YMMV aa
