New turntable project, I just bought an SP-25!
« on: 14 Aug 2007, 04:19 am »
Yesterday night on Ebay, I picked up an SP-25 Technics broadcast table.
I have a spare SME 309 hangin around, so I'm gonna test my wood working
skills and build a plinth.  Not sure out of what yet!

Should be done by Christmas, or CES for sure!

If anyone knows anything about the SP-25, let me know!

thanks!

Jeff, that sounds like a fun project, I'll be interested to reading the setup process.

I'm having with vinyl right now as well.  Kurt at Echo was nice enough to loan me a Denon with a Grado cartridge.  It's easy to forget how enjoyable vinyl can be, both listening and reading the liner notes without squinting.

Hiya Jeff,

Congrats on the table  :thumb: Should be a fun project.

Since the table is flat silver/gray, a gloss black plinth might look pretty cool. Assuming you are going to do a high mass plinth, you might be able use some synthetic marble or Corian to sandwich some MDF like this....

Might look kinda cool when its done.

Be sure to dampen the entire underside of the tables plinth and platter with rope caulk (Mortite) or some other dampening material like this that Parts Express carries.

Those aluminum platters and plinths tend to ring quite a bit. I started doing this to my turntables way back in the 70's and it works wonders.

Be sure to post pics when you get it finished  :green:

Will do!  Actually, I screwed up, I bought an SP-15!!
(I was bidding on both, but won the SP-15)

Good advice and it will be fun to actually put something a little
custom together.

Ill keep you guys posted!

10 years ago I ripped apart an old Yamaha record player and completely rebuilt it!
It was very fun! ... but it ended up going 5% to slow, I never could figure out why..
But it had thunderous bass!!! Really crazy!

I primed the underside of the alu platter with noxudol, a car chassis dampening compound!
It was as dead as a doornail, did not ring!
