Hi all,

Going to head out and look at some Calipers on tuesday. I understand its important to see if there are signs of foam detioration. Also if the ribbons have any buzzing, or cracking sounds. And the overall condition of the frame.

OK, now if all this checks out, and I decide to bring them home. Is there a tune-up process for them that I can do? Can the bass panels be tightened reasonably easily? Should I even worry about this, if there is no noise from them? Is there a way to inspect foam other than dissasembling the entire speaker? I really dont want a restoration project, but I am willing to invest time and some $ into tuning them up. Your thoughts and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, plan to run them with a pair of Monarchy SM 70 PRO amplifiers set to mono. Should be amp enough for moderate listening levels in a smaller room.

Regards
Mister Pig

Hey mister pig, where do you live?  I have a pair for sale at a local store,
just wondering if they are mine?

Mister Pig,
Late reply, but hopefully you've thoroughly checked out the Apogee Owners Group forum. Anymore, used Apogees need to be approached with eyes very wide open. Hopefully those are Caliper Signatures, they WILL buzz eventually and Bass Ribbons are sold to professional installers, only.  No more do it yourself on Bass Ribbons. You can install the MRT ribbons yourself, however. It would be rare with the age, that there wouldn't be a little bit of buzz unless superb shape. Audition inperson with Bass heavy music and listen, often buzz will start at only one or two frequencies and can be lived with for quite awhile. How long before it evolves into a repair issue, impossible without taking the covers off and having someone with A LOT of experiance inspect. Foam almost certainly has started to break down. A rebuilt pair of Caliper Sigs(both ribbon runs, new paint, etc.) runs $4500-5000 any more.
Good luck as they still sound wonderful with some time experimenting with positioning.
