Check this out!!
« on: 11 Aug 2007, 10:40 pm »
I just bought about 1300+ tubes - all supposed to be NOS.  I couldn't even fit them all in my camera view.  They have been in storage for years.  Bought them from a young 20 something guy that got them from a retired tv/radio repair shop/man.  Guess what I paid?? :o :o  $100 bucks for the whole lot.  I'm kinda freekin, hehehehe

TonyD- You should be ashamed of yourself. Now you march right back down there and give that young man his other $2000 if you ever want to get a good night's sleep again. You're going to give us a bad name.

I think I do have some - they're all sorted numerically.  I have no idea of knowing if they are good or not.  Doesn't make sense though that a repair guy would keep bad tubes??  I also have a few cross reference booklets.  I love the smell of old boxes  :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

Nice score  :green:  :thumb:

Welcome to the wonderful world of tube hoarders  :D  So did you pick up a tube tester at the same time? That or maybe a decent vacuum tube volt meter?

Oh, most of the old service guys stuffed their old tubes taken out of sets under repair into the new tubes box. They may or may not have tested the tubes, keeping those that were marginal or better. If it were me, I'd test each of them just to make sure. Better safe than sorry.

Tony, you know it's not nice to rub such things in. At least tell us they cost you a fortune so we wouldn't feel so jealous. :duh:

Bought them from a young 20 something guy that got them from a retired tv/radio repair shop/man.

I wonder if the old repair guy has realized that all his tubes are gone  :o

No seriously, nice find!  :thumb:

its gonna take a long time to get them all sorted out.  They seem to be in number order though.  I really think I need to get a tube tester.  Any recommendations on an effective but inexpensive unit?  I like "Tony's Tube Emporium" :)  The repair guy died a few years ago ;(

Thanks
Tony

This would be nice, it applies a signal to the tubes when testing...
Actually, this is the one you should go for... :thumb:

Wow,  that looks very nice with impressive features but it's $850 bucks!  Ouch... I don't even know if these tubes are good and would be worth it.  Most do look like they have never been used - just a little dusty from sitting for years and the boxes are fragile.

Thanks

Ok...
This then.. http://www.vacuumtube.com/toppage31.htm
I'm sure it is cheaper...but it's not as good all things put together...

You could also read a good book on the subject..

Thanks Imperial   I need to find a tester that will test a very broad range of tubes.  I seem to have one of just about everything it seems.  They go from a-z literally.  This is going to be fun ;)
