I've always had a soft spot for Ascend, since they are run by a friendly, down to earth guy. When I was browsing around he helped me a ton in my search for the right equipment.
That said Ascend relies more on high quality drivers than the crossover networks. I would guess the cost split is around 70% drivers, 30% crossover. This can work pretty well for budget designs and what Ascend offers.
However, after building my AV-3s I realized how much Danny puts into the networks. I would guess about a 50/50 cost split. The flatwire inductors (or whatever they are) were the size of a baseball, and the sonocaps were also quite impressive. The wire used was about 14 gauge copper, which is much thicker than any commercial speakers I've seen. By the same token however I wasn't blown away with the drivers, but they sound great.
Basically you just have to choose based on what sounds better to you.
