FS/ Scott 222C with extras. ** sold **
« on: 7 Aug 2007, 06:32 pm »
Finally and very reluctantly  I am selling my Scott 222C that I bought from another AC member last Winter.  Also included are a number of extras that should appeal to anybody who wants to do a nice restoration.

The amp was described as in working condition when I bought it (and I have no reason to doubt it) but on the advice of several Scott amp rebuilders I was cautioned that turning it on, especially after shipping could cause the slenium rectifier to go and possibly take the power transformer and other parts with it, and that this part should be replaced with a new SS one before trying to use the amp.

The condition of this amp is really excellent considering it is 45 years old.  The faceplate has very few minor blemishes (most of which appear to be easily cleaned up and on the edges.)  The lettering is intact and in excellent condition with the exception of the "O", "W" and "E" in the word "power".  There are some scratches along the edges of the front panel from the edges of the metal cover, but with it on these are invisible.  The original naugahyde covered steel cover is in fair condition with parts of the naugahyde chipping and peeling up (though these spots are small and most of them repairable).  The remainder of the chassis is exceptionally clean with no scratches or corrosion and the transformers are likewise clean and have no rusting.

The tubes included are:

2 Mullard EL84s and 2 Phillips Miniwatt EL84 (made by Mullard), an old and probably shot chinese 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier, 2 RCA 6U8As and 4 Bell and Howell (made by RCA) 12AX7s under their original metal shields.  It appears that most of these tubes (except the rectifier) are in fairly good shape, but without being able to turn it on, there's no way to tell for sure (except that the Mullards are fairly long lived tubes.)

The extras include a custom made solid walnut slide-on cover with ventilation slots in the top, and 4 adjustable feet for height adjustment and levelling.  This cover sits loosely on top and is very easily picked up off the amp and is great for tube rolling  or for when you just want to see glowing tubes (as apparently many people use these amps fully open with no cover at all.)  This cover was an $80 addition.

There is also a set of custom made brass knobs to replace the brown plastic originals (though apparently the brass doesn't match the faceplate exactly).  These were $50 add-on purchased from Ryan at Hot Glass Audio and are in their original packaging.

And finally, for anybody who meets my very reasonable price, I'll throw in a very nice pair of hand selected, tested and matched NOS RCA 6U8As from Andy at Vintage tube services.  A note about these -- you can find 6U8As for $5 all over the place, but because of the very tight manufacturing tolerances of these tubes (a triode and pentode in one small bottle) they have a fairly high failure rate and finding a good audio quality matched pair takes a bit of work on the part of the tube vendor, and andy has done that.  RCA is the original designer of the 6U8A and according to Andy these are the best you can get.  This cost me $52 for the pair.

Ok, so I've spelled everything out honestly and as best as I can, and just to make sure, this is an amp that will need to be at least partially rebuilt to be usable (but should last a very long time after that), is very clean, has some of the best small amp transformers ever made, and is in an exceptionally clean and well preserved chassis, and includes some nice extras.  I paid $340 plus shipping for the amp, $80 for the custom solid walnut cover, and $50 for the brass knob set.  That's $490 not including shipping.

I'm asking $375 plus shipping and paypal and as mentioned above, will throw in the extra NOS 6U8As for anybody who meets this price (and in all likeliness I probably won't be going any lower).  I'll leave it here for AC members through the weekend and then if there's no interest will most likely post it on agon and audio karma.

This is a fine specimen for somebody who wants to put the extra effort into restoring a great sounding classic EL84 based integrated amp.

I don't have any pictures at the moment but can get them for anybody who's seriously interested.  PM with any questions.

Thanks for looking,

Jim

I should also add that I do currently have a place in the NOS Valves queue, which I can transfer to the new owner (since Craig won't let me out and has put me on "hold".)
