This is a great score...the first time I can remember hearing it.  Just bought a sweet LP from Deutsche Grammophon of it  :thumb:

Does anyone know if it's been the basis of a film score?...it sounds so familiar, yet not, to me

It's really nice.  I'm listening on my long dormant Maggies....these planars really excel at re-production of classical scores (I'm not as fond of them otherwise, overall)

Mars, and themes based on explicitly on Mars and the planets in general (think original Star Wars soundtrack) are all over the place.  Jupiter is another frequently heard...I wish I could remember more specifically. :duh:  You might be recalling more explicit references to the planets from commercials.

Yeah, could be on all....parts of the first side also sound like parts of the soundtrack to 'Gladiator'.

It's quite a disc, really  :thumb:

The old Bernstein NYP version is fun too, but lower fidelity, worth a listen for the excitement of Lenny.

Bill Conti used several sections in The Right Stuff.  In my opinion, the transitions between sections were done arbitrarily and without any effort or skill.

The Road Warrior used Mars.

On television, Jerry Goldsmith used a "going into battle" theme on Star Trek:  The Next Generation that was heavily based on Mars.  Perhaps it was the 5/4 meter.

TCG, just like so many other classical music, Holst's Planets have been used a lot in pop culture.  You have heard bits and pieces everywhere.   Look at a list here (scroll down to the longest post in the middle)

You can see why there is familiarity.
