Oldr Clari-T amp and Promitheus TVC..ok matchup?
« on: 2 Aug 2007, 03:47 am »
I am pondering a Clari-T amp for my Tannoys/EV12trxb's. I have a Promitheus TVC preamp...I know they dont recommend 2 passive components together...is this combo workeable?
upgrades it has  are the volume control, auricaps, black gates, bigger battery (24 hours on a charge) and upgraded RCA jacks and speaker binding posts.

thanks in advance

The Promithius seems to get a big thumbs up for use with the Trends tripath, but of course that can have the volume control bipassed easily (with a jumper - makes me wonder how much better it would be with the jumper out of the circuit ).

If the volume control on the Clari-T is maxed out, perhaps that will do the same thing.

If you ponder too long someone else may just snaffle that Clari-T before you, and I bet it will drive the Tannoys wonderfully-with or without the TVC

I'm sure Vinnie will confirm or deny....

The primary function of any TVC is as an impedance buffer between source(s) and amp.  If your source(s) impedance is high (say above 1000 ohms) it would probably be a benefit (CDP inpedances can range from 30 to 30,000 ohms).  Since you already have a good volume control, the only advantage of a TVC pre-amp would be the ability to have multiple inputs connected.

Paul_Bui is a AC member who has a maxed out dual monoblock Clari-T and has tried both active tube pre-amps and (I believe) the Promitheus TVC.  You might want to PM him, unfortunately I haven't "seen" him around here lately.  I know he's a big believer in using a pre-amp to really "energize" the Clari-T.

I'm sure the TVC will work out, even if the Clari-T has its own passive volume attenuator.  However, I can always remove the volume control in the Clari-T for you (and install a new front panel without a hole in the center where the volume control used to be :)) if you wanted to go this route.

It would be close if it wasn't for the input impedance of the amp with the volume control in the circuit.  If the volume control is 10k, that pretty much the input impedance of that Clari-T... and I'm not sure how well the TVC will do with driving 10k.  If the volume control was removed and the input jacks of the Clari-T connected directly to the input of the amp, the input impedance would be much higher (greater than 100k) and when using a passive like a TVC, this is a more ideal situation.

Best regards,

Vinnie
