It's what they use for making transformers. And presumably, electromagnets

(never thought of that before). The one I used is supposedly audiophile grade magnet wire from Michael Percy, but I'm not convinced it makes any difference at all. Even so it's not expensive. You can get a packet of three sizes from Radio Shack, electronics suppliers may also sell small (-ish i.e. not by the pound!) quantities. Here in Oz Jaycar has it in all sizes. In the US
www.hndme.com has it I think.
I think Tonto's idea w/ the cheapo RS jacks is a good one, I used those when I first experimented with ICs and could still tell the difference between cable constructions so the jacks can't be that bad. Maybe I'll make up a set using the Ratshack parts and compare to my Risch recipe ICs for a lark.
You can also braid the magnet wire if you get keen
