Occasionally I post here about a great CD, and although the response is often deafening silence, here's another one.
Lyrita SRCD 236, Gerald Finzi, Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra. I can hear the yawns already, but these are superb recordings. Lyrita was well-known for its natural sounding orchestral recordings and this has transferred very well to CD. I had the Lp, still have it, but my record player has been down for years, so this is a welcome re-release. Much of the back catalogue of Lyrita is finally coming out on CD at reasonable prices, but there's no telling how long they will be available. Anyway, the cello concerto features a brilliant teenage cellist named Yo-Yo Ma in his first recording. I have other versions of the clarinet concerto, but this one is the best. These late 1970s recordings are just excellent in every way.
