My integrated amp has sub preouts and I'm not happy with my cheap jbl sub.  Can anyone recommend a good sub for my 2-channel rig? I'm concerned primarily with how it would perform with music more than with movies.... here's my system

There are numerous subs that will work great with music. The basic things to look for are sealed boxes with a low/mid Q, or a ported/pr design with a low tuning point below 20hz (this gives great group delay numbers into the 30hz range).

The ACI's and the REL Strata seem to get the best reviews and results for music.  There is an almost new latest edition Titan on Audiogon now for $850,  The smaller Force has also gotten rave reviews for music.

Of all the subs I've heard (and I've heard a LOT), the VMPS Originals or Largers (in a stereo pair) are the only subs I would recommend for a high end 2 channel setup.

I like the vmps subs but they require a separate amp and it might exceed my price range.  I've read great reviews of it though....

ya may be pleasantly surprised how relatively affordable a pair of vmps subs, outboard x-over & amp really are.  get the amp/x-over used, and vmps dealers are competitive on new...  

when i 1st got my sub system, thiel 3.5's were my mains.  they only go a little lower than the 3.6's ya use.  to get anything even worth using w/your mains will cost a *lot* more than a pair of vmps w/active outboard electronics, imo...  if ya can't budget it right now, save yer pennies.  don't waste yer money meanwhile...

Would a plate amp work with a VMPS sub?  You could get a plate amp with built-in crossover from someone like Apex and make a box to enclose the amp if it would work.  This would be a really cheap solution if it would work.  Any thoughts?

i wouldn't bother w/a plate amp; crappy electronics will preclude wanting to cross the monitors over; one of the main benefits of subwoofin', imo...  inexpensive pro-audio x-overs from dbx, behringer, art, etc, are awailable from places like fullcompass.com, which are more than transparent enuff to make them worthwhile to use, 'til ya can save for a marchand/ db systems/bryston/etc...  and, if ya don't wanna buy a used amp, pick up something like the art sla for <$200...  

the above, while a li'l more $$$ than a plate amp, is a *lot* more quality, imo...

I would take a look at the ACI and upcoming Onix UFW-10 subs. Probably some of the most musical subs out there, as long as you don't want the absolute lowest extension.

if you buy a vmps large i can sell you the amp i used with mine before i upgraded to odyssey mono's, its a harmon kardon pa2000 4x45 or 100 x2.
works great for music but lacks power for obnoxious ht movies, its a year or so old 100$.

contact one of the vmps sales men that hang out here(i used jim at ribbon speakers)they will take a % off list

Trust me, I've heard HSU, SVS, Adire, Blueprint, Aerial, REL, and more than a few others.  None of them hold a candle to a pair of New Original subs with megawoofers.  Articulation and transient response is just on a whole nother level w/the VMPS subs.  Easily the best subs for music I have ever heard.

Now, on the other hand, if you want something that will blur your vision with bass output, then a blueprint 1503 or an Evererst from Acoustic-visions will do that more readily than even the Larger VMPS sub will.

Do you have a point here Tyson? If this was in response to my reply, then I don't quite see the validity. Obviously the subs I listed are not on your list of what you have heard. The VMPS subs are great...but as always, listen to as many choices as possible.

sorry for the delay in responding...
   I have a stupid question for you guys out there.  My integrated amp (coda-continuum unison) has sub pre-outs and allows me to integrate the subs volume level from my remote control.  Could I do this if my sub has an outboard amp? If so, I think I'll have to look at the vmps sub.  I also like the rocket ufw-10 (right in my price range   )... the talon rocs are just too expensive as well as the thiel subwoofer.  has anyone tried the nht subs or the vandersteen 2wq?
