Comparing GR A/V-1 and AV123 x-ls
« on: 21 Jul 2007, 03:09 pm »
Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could tell me the difference between the A/V-1 and the x-ls.  All things being equal, is it worth building the A/V-1 vs. just buying the x-ls and doing the Skiing Ninja upgrades?  From the little I've read, it seems like the latter gets you 'there' without having to build the cabinets.  And the cabinets on the x-ls look like they're quite well made.

(I guess the same might also be said of the A/V-3 vs. the x-mtm.)

Any thoughts would be apprectaed.

Thanks,
Joe

Both are great values but different.

The X-LS uses good quality parts but not the extreme high quality parts that come with the A/V-1 kit, especially if ordering the kit with a Sonicap upgrade.

The result of the difference in parts quality is a performance advantage for the A/V-1. Detail levels and resolution will be better in the A/V-1 and they will have a more clear overall sound.

The tweeters are made similar other than the face plate and dome material. They do sound slightly different but one is not a huge stand out over the other.

The woofers are also very similar and made by the same manufacturer. The X-LS uses a larger 6.5" woofer while the A/V-1 uses a smaller 5.25" woofer.

I'd have to give an edge to the A/V-1 in the upper ranges of the woofer as it is smaller, lighter and more agile. But it gives up some fullness and body to the larger X-LS woofer.

With the near 3khz crossover of the A/V-1 being a series crossover there is really good driver integration that would not be possible with the larger woofer if crossed that high, but the larger woofer in the X-LS is not having to play as high. It is crossed in the 2kHz range so not much of an advantage to the A/V-1 there.

If the X-LS were upgraded (a la Ninja Master crossovers) to the same high quality parts the differences between the two would be subtle with one advantage still going to the X-LS. That would be the bigger and fuller sound from the larger woofer.

Thanks, Danny.  Sounds like the x-ls with the Ninja mods is the way to go if you don't want or have time to build the cabinets.

A few more questions if you don't mind...

The x-sls also looks intriguing.  Are there Ninja upgrades available for that as well?  How does the x-sls compare to the x-ls?  The same with a bit more bass?

Also, how do the Rockets compare with the x series?

Thanks again,
Joe

bump

(Danny - sorry if my question regarding the Rockets was out of line...it was not meant to be but it occurred to me later that it may have been a dumb thing to ask since you work with the AV123 folks.)

Could you comment on the x-sls per my question above?

Thanks,
Joe

Sorry about forgetting about your questions.

Sure. They use the same network as the X-LS.

They are the same speaker, but the X-sls is an optimal ported enclosure and it allows for more low end extension.

Also good, but different.

Would it be possible to use the 165 xbl driver in the X-LS?

Not with the same crossover.

If you want a step up from the standard X-LS there will be a new version using a really high quality tweeter plus upgraded caps (Sonicaps) all for only $299. a pair. All will be available through AV123.
