The D-Link DNS 323 NAS supposedly has a built in iTunes server and FTP access via the internet.

Here is a review by a guy with a Squeezebox

I have it and so far, so good. I'm using it in a RAID 1 configuration and it does the job. I don't use the iTunes portion but FTP works fine.

If your after a NAS storage solution, it's not a bad option.

what size SATA drives did you use?

Do you find it behaves like an external USB drive?

Do you backup to this NAS from your PC?

What do you do with the FTP capabilities?

I went with 2 - 500gb Seagate Barracudas. As for how it acts, I have them mapped on every computer that is running on my home network.....basically they act as just another drive. Every PC on my network uses it to not only back-up but to also access MP3 files and video files.

I also use it with my SD Transporter to stream audio without any problems.

As for FTP, I use it to let other family members (spread out all over the world) access our home movies, pictures etc. I also use it when I'm not at home and need to access something.

Once you get the hang of it, it's a great system to have.

Thanks for the info! I am thinking about getting one in the future...

Came across this

"I've been very psyched about my dns-323.  It's fast and quiet -- AND it's incredibly easily hackable to run customizable bash scripts and runs linux - without needing custom firmware(!) It already runs debian!  Also, I think some of the xBox and iTunes concerns are being addressed by the hacking community.

You can find out the answers to a lot of the software, hardware, and hacking details here:

a lot of fun.
The box runs samba and NFS so appears as a regular windows share.  The filesystem you should use is ext2, and you should use the latest firmware, only. honestly, not perfect, but really good.  I'm running it with two 400gb sata II drives in raid-1."

Hello, new here....well, hardly any posts, that is. Just powered up my new DNS-323 and when I got to the Format screen I did not get the option to select ext2 or ext3. It formatted in ext2. What is the difference? I will configure the two Barracuda 500GB drives in RAID 1.

not sure that ext3 is an option for you - read about it in the links provided above
