Loose on/off switch on Tempest
« on: 6 Jul 2007, 11:21 pm »
Can anyone advise me as to how to remove the large black knob that is attached to the on/off switch on my Tempest pre? The switch locknut is loose, and I can't figure out what tool is needed to remove the large black knob so as to gain access to the locknut. I've tried inserting various sizes of hex keys, but none seem to do any good.

thanks

Tried calling several times today but could not connect....

Can you simply tell me what tool is needed to loosen the set screw?

I've used various sizes of metric allen wrenches, and none fit. I've tried phillips head screwdrivers, and flat head screwdrivers, and none fit. I even tried SAE standard sizes of allen wrenches, and none fit.

I am truly mystified as to what kind of tool is needed to remove the knob.....

Please advise.

ml,

Sorry, I can't provide help on the type of fastener used.  Keep in mind today is Saturday, and even Klaus has a personal life.

Normally, the best time to catch him on the phone is in the afternoon or evenings.  He stays up all hours of the night building our products and likes to get some sleep once in awhile, if he is not out on the links. :)

Klaus actually called me!

He advised me on the proper tool, which is an SAE allen wrench, not metric as I had assumed....

Now I need to go find the right size. My large collection apparently is missing the one size I need.

Would you mind stating the size here? I would like to a adjust the volume knob on my Tempest to more accurately reflect the wiper location, mine is about a full hour and a half off. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I do not know the size. I only know that the pile of allen wrenches sitting on my workbench is missing the one that fits.
I guess I need to go out and buy a new set, with all the sizes intact.

I do know that it's small, around 8/32 of an inch, but I won't know until I buy a new set and find the one that fits. Then there is the possibility that my set screw is stripped. Which means, the only real option is to send it to Klaus and maybe one of his techs can figure out how to remove it. This may require a blow torch,  a chain saw, a hammer and some duct tape.

Well now i am the proud owner of a complete set of allen wrenches. None of which seem to engage the setscrew to remove the knob on my Tempest. This is way frustrating. I can't seem to get any allen wrench to engage or get any of the four set screws on the two front knobs to budge.

Now my on off switch is doing a 360. It's totally loose now.

Yes,  please do so.  We'll take care of it right away.  Might have to replace a switch.
