Has anyone tried the Iron Audio or Funk Achroplat platter on a Rega TT?

I have a nice P3 with the Incognito rewire and Michell Tecnoweight now and just found a Deep Groove subplatter on Agone for it that is on the way. I was thinking about replacing the platter with either a Funk Achroplat (where do they come up with that name?)

or an Iron Audio Sheer acrylic platter.

I'd be using either with a Herbies Way Excellent mat.
Has anyone tried either of these platters on their Rega TT? Thoughts?

Since you have the Deep Groove subplatter have you seen their acrylic platter? I like it a little better than the Iron one but that's just me, it does cost more though.

Let us know what you think of the subplatter, it's on my list.

John

Edit: Had the name wrong, it's not "Deep Groove", it's Groove Tracer. Sorry about that.

ETR, FWIW, the Iron Audio platter weighs 39.5 ozs and the stock Rega glass platter weighs 73 ozs. DO the math, you'll lose a lot of mass if you swap platters.

Thank you-I think the Herbies mat on the stock platter will be just fine. I guess my P3 is about as pimped as it can get now 8)

Hi Eric,

I've used both an Achromat (in conjunction with the stock glass platter) and the full Achroplat with a Rega P5 to great effect. The best results however were with the Achroplat - it is only then that you get the full benefit and effect the Funk Firm intended.

If you do it, expect more detail in terms of musical information, better timing, more expression and communication with music, a faster, more 'funky' sound (no pun intended!) and, tonally, a sweeter top end and firmer bass, but with seemingly more extension. Personally, I think either the Achromat or Achroplat transforms the Rega.

Your call 8)

If I can be of any more help just let me know.

Marco.

Marco-With the Achroplat you are not using a mat correct?

Yep, with the Achroplat no mat, just the Achroplat 'au naturel', and it's awesome with the Rega :)

Btw, don't know if you've done so already, but another no-brainer upgrade for the Rega is the external PSU. This really transforms the deck quite significantly, and if you're handy, one other thing you could do is have the arm stripped and polished down to the bare metal. Removing the paint from the arm (as it is on an RB1000) really opens up the sound, and if done right looks really cool 8)

Marco, ETR has the P3. He can't add the external P.S. The newly released P3 does support the external P.S.
He could buy a Project Speedbox SE, however it is pricey at $550.

Ah yes, true. I forgot it was a P3.

Still, the arm paint stripping and polishing is still worth the effort :)
