Hello all,
A friend of mine just gave me his old hafler amp. I figured it would be worth my while to work it into my system to power the bass cabinets and let my tubed jolida 202 integrated power the tweeters and mids. My problem is this..How do I rig it all together? The speaker cabinets are bi wirable, there are no passive outputs on the jolida, the hafler also only has rca inputs and speaker outs. The only thing I can think of is out of the cd player (which is all I'd run on this setup) there are two separate outputs-line and main.  one has attenuation (ss?), the the other doesn't (tubed?) How do I work this? My idea was:

to run both the cd outputs. The tubed non-attenuated section to the integrated amp, the attenuated line level output to the hafler. I'd have to turn two knobs in order to turn it up or down but I could live with that. Will this work OK? or do I absolutely need some sort of pre or crossover?
thanks in advance, beat

If the Jolida does not have a variable out/pre-out or 'attenuated' output, then this will be difficult and probably not sound good.

Using the 'attenuated' line outs of your CD player would sort of work but, will probably offer less benefit than it's worth.  The only way I can think of that this might 'work' is if you use the variable/attenuated outputs from the CD player with a Y-cable that runs to the Jolida inputs and the Hafler.  You would need to keep the volume turned to its maximum to have a balanced sound... but, the Hafler and Jolida probably won't match anyway.

Your best bet would be to either sell the Hafler... or modify it and use it somewhere else... or modify it, buy a preamp, and sell the Jolida... Gasp!  Those are the only options I see but, maybe someone else has a better idea.

thanks carlman,
Aside from everything else, are you saying that it isn't a good idea to run both pairs of outs from the cdp at the same time? For the record, the attenuation of the line output is actually a volume controlling potentiometer. I figured between tweaking that and tweaking the volume of the jolida amp I could get pretty good control. Will that lead to problems?

The way you described will not create any problems that I can see... nor will others.. on a technical basis... I mean, it will work and be safe.  However, my point was that it may not sound good.  Also, how will you know when you've turned up the CD player to the same level as the Jolida?  Just do it by ear?

It'll be a fun experiment so, go play!

experiment it is!!
A studio engineer friend of mine is suggesting pro audio electronic crossovers, splitting the cd interconnect into a Y, or using a pre amp. I want to keep the electronics to a minimum though..I will post results as I progress. I'm ok with turning two volume knobs to adjust bass and treble for now. I do love lots of bass so maybe it is a good thing :D
