Interfacing the Olive Musica and Nokia 770
« on: 2 Jul 2007, 05:24 pm »
I have a couple questions about interfacing the Olive Musica and Nokia 770 (just got the Nokia today)?

I have two Musicas, in two different rooms. If possible, I'd like to be able to use the Nokia as a remote for one of them (or both?) without hooking anything up to my computer or network (neither is, or ever has been, hooked up to my Apple G4 or wired network).
Can anyone walk me through how to do this?

If it needs to be connected to the computer or network, I can do this, but I don't presently have a wireless network (I do have a router that I use on occasion to connect a laptop PC, wired with a USB cable, using a  "Linksys Homelink Phoneline 10M USB Network Adapter." But, if possible, I'd like to be able to use the Nokia without the network.
Thanks

In case anyone else is interested, here's how I set up the Nokia to be used as a remote for the Olive, unconnected to my computer network, but with only one unit. It's really nice to sit in the sweet spot and scroll through your music collection on this little device. Thanks to Olive support for their help setting it up.

If you don't have a wireless network, you just set the Olive as the Server. This way, the Musica sends out a wireless signal to the Nokia, and the Nokia connects to the Olive Network.

To do this, go into 'settings and special' on the Olive. Then into Network. Set the mode to Olive Music Network (not Home or Expert Mode), and make sure the WLAN is turned on. Save the changes by turning the outside wheel to the left. Now, with Configuration Highlighted, press the Information button. This will display the IP address of the Music (write it down for use with the Nokia).
With the Nokia, search for available wireless networks, and the Olive Music network should show up in the list---> Select this
Now your Nokia will be on the right network, so open a browser window and enter the IP address of the Musica into the address bar. This will bring you to the Olive Web Interface.

Make sure to enter a Network name. Mine was blank and wouldn't work until named (I called mine Olive).

Well done Richard :thumb:

I don't have an Olive, but I may like one in due course, and it is nice to know that Olive support is sufficiently interested and flexible to help you with this. I seem to remember a thread a while ago that recorded a bad experience with them, so it's good to hear an opposite veiw.

The Nokia is a cool bit of kit at the close out price isn't it?

Now, when someone releases a plug in for Slimserver, so that a Squeezebox can talk to an Olive I will get my wallet out :green:
