You might consider the ATI AT602 http://www.ati-amp.com/at602.html It is very well made, sounds good and well within your price (most dealers sell below the msrp, try Audio Nut). It has another advantage - input gain controls. I went through a NAD C320BEE, Decware Zen and now the ATI AT602 trying to get the right amp for my desktop system at work. The gain controls made the difference.

For volume control and allowing an external crossover for adding a subwoofer, I use the NHT PVC http://nhthifi.com/2006/products/pchifi/pvcpc.html

A few years back I bought a factory reconditioned HK receiver (current model at about half of the street price).  Sounded very nice but not for long.  It kept blowing diodes.  It came with a 2 year warrantee, and the company said if they blew the 3rd time they'd replace the receiver, but the 3rd time came after 2 years, so I pitched it.
