Got 4 sheets of ERS, now what to do with it?
« on: 26 Jun 2007, 03:18 pm »
For anybody that's experimented with the Stillpoints ERS paper, where do you find it most beneficial?  I've seen applications like a thin strip wrapped around the body of power cords and RCA's, pieces cut and put on top of caps inside electronics, wrapped around power transformers.

I think the really difficult part is going to be evaluating effect of applications.  I expect the changes to be incrementally minute, my system might resolve enough to show changes ... but I don't know if I'll hear it or not :)

FYI, the 2-channel listening stream consists of:
- Parasound Halo C2
- Pair of D-Sonic www.d-sonic.net Magnum 1000S amps, bi-amping mains (ICEpower 1000ASP modules)
- Stock (for now) Squeezebox3 with Elpac power supply
- Everything plugged into a Monster HTS2600 MKii

Both the ICEpower amps and Halo C2 have switching power supplies, so there are no torroidal transformers in my system.  I figure that makes a difference in my approach.

Can anyone explain how an ungrounded piece of metallized paper reduces RFI/EMI?  This site lists an attenuation range versus frequency, but I can't figure out how it could perform this function without being grounded:

I've seen it used in 2 places, primarily stuck on the cover of the unit:
 - over the transformer & power section
 - over the main electronics in digital equipment

But one thing that seems to be commonly agreed upon, don't overdo it and use too much.

Enjoy,
Bob

Stealth aircraft are also not grounded.  Just something to think about.

Open up any BPT power conditioners especially the expensive one you can see ERS covers everywhere in that.

Too funny!

I have actually had the most benefit using it on my modded squeezebox. Since it is a wireless receiver, and I have a 2.4 ghz wireless network, It lowered the noise floor considerably when I lined the inside of the top, and covered the bottom from the outside.

I have tried it on my Nuforce amps with no success. Evidently the rf frequencies that they generate are out of the range of the ERS.

CD players have been hit and miss.  I hear reductions in glare on many players, and on occasion I don't hear any improvement.

One thing is for sure,  keep it from analog circuits.  It will attenuate the highs and "suck the life" out of the music.  At least in my experience.

Indeed that was funny.   Reality check?

Even though my Promitheus DAC is in a break-in time I still noticed the sweetness of music and blacking background exist after installing the ERS on transformers of PS and output trannies and the wires.  :thumb:

(((IMPORTANT)))

ERS does reduce the amount of EMI, but it can also ruin your equipment.  Being that I'm a manufacture, I've seen many units that have come back for repair after ERS was applied.  Just remember that the Carbon strips inside the paper are REALLY conductive (as much as metal), and can short any circuit out if placed correctly.  Normally you are OK, but when you cut the paper down, you will notice the edges will expose the fibers that can easily cause damage.  BE VERY CAREFULL WITH THIS STUFF AND USE IT WISELY.  I would suggest covering the edges with a narrow strip of tape, or something to conceal the edge.  The most affected areas which could benefit from ERS is the switching components, and or anything that is known to radiate RFI.

Have fun with the material,

Thanks,
EJ

I have used about a .25 of a sheet on my Rev III preamp, and the same amount on my DVD player and power amp. It seems to work just as effectively when placed on the outside of the case as on the inside.

You could line the inside of your breaker box and/or line the duplex outlet covers with ERS. I did but I didn't trust the adhesive backing so I got some RTV electronic silicone sealant just to make sure the stuff stayed in place. I've surrounded speaker terminals with ERS, if you have a power strip you could cover the inner walls with ERS, i've even ran a strip of ERS down the backs of AC dupex outlets and covering them with sealant. Yea I know, sick but when it comes to power, I think that's where ERS really shines,,,,unlike inside components where a little goes a long way. The only thing with power applications is ya got to be real careful as this stuff is conductive. If I had a family, I wouldn't have risked it but it's just me and I will go that extra tweak or at least I use to. Guess after 25-30 sheets, it started getting a little old. 20 of those sheets are inside my BPT conditioner!  aa

ERS seems to work great on my Super Squeezebox player. I use them in the outboard power supply near the power transformer and also on the Squeezebox chassis itself to prevent noise from the display radiating into the digital and analog circuits.

The pulse transformer I installed is also shielded with ERS, as well as the BNC connection. I figure it should help reduce the amount of 2.5 GHz RF coming from the nearby WIFI card.

My EAD DAC is also treated with ERS sheets, specially the power transformer and digital sections.

I've used around 3 sheets between these components with great results. The system, by nature, is warm and not very hot on top, so I don't think I've over done it!!  aa
