Tannoy 215 monsters - anyone tried them?
« on: 23 Jun 2007, 09:54 pm »
Could be that it is time to think about new speakers. My current ones are ATC 20 ASL Pro, a kinda studio type active monitors that are very clean and neutral but not the most perfect speaker for home listening.

I want to go towards a high efficiency solution, and with my room of average size (24m2, 3m ceiling) I am pretty sure some big horns wouldn't work. So I am think about rather conservative solution - DC Tannoys.

After checking ads and stuff, I noticed that the current studio monsters with two 15" drivers (one sub and one DC) 215 DMT II go pretty low compared to new price of nearly $10.000.

I am wondering if any of you tried it and what are the thoughts. How far are they from the old Tannoy's magic and should I be worried about having four 15" drivers in around 70-75m3 in terms of bass overkill.

Cheers G

too forensic and unforgiving. i'd love something that makes more emotions and less analysis out of music.

though they are great but not for everyone.

could be i just want some change.

Hey!

You mean a pair of this monster? :o

Never heard them but they sure look impressive. :D

But I've heard a pair from their Prestige Series, the "Turnberry" Look like something from the '40 and '50s. They have 10" dual concentric drivers. And they sound wonderful with very good tonality. And with dual concentric drive the integration between the drivers is excellent. One of my favorite 2-ways I've heard :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

I really really wanted a pair of those myself.  I've got their little brothers and love 'em.  I suspect the 215s have got more bass extension, power handling, bulky impractical-coolness and all.  My feeling is that what better speaker could one have than the ones which might have been used to make the music you listen to.  Well...that and a multi-kilobuck acoustically controlled room! *doh*

i dunno, i wish i can hear these somewhere in a similar room to mine. i measured it again and it's even smaller than what i've thought so 22m2 only. mostlikely 4x15" drivers would cause a havoc in such a room with a suspended floor. when local tannoy dealer (of prestige series only) demoed some of the big monsters recently at a hifi show, they didn't use any dedicated stands but instead they put 2 big wooden posts under them - looked fantastic and sounded very good. i assume i could take  a similar 2 big marble/granite pieces from a local stone workshop and use them in a similar way to decouple the speakers from the floor, but still who can guarantee it is not going to bum.

i think that 215 has very good drivers (paper cones all around) but most likely there might be lots of work with the crossover.
