Enjoying motorcycle season?
« on: 23 Jun 2007, 05:18 pm »
Being as I just bought my 5th bike after a 7 year lapse I spent some time on a motorcycle forum.  It is good to see people stressing safety so much. They also strongly discourage any new rider away from any 600cc or larger race bike. These bikes will all do the quarter in the 10's these days, a sure recipe for a newbie having an accident. Heck I'd be very wary of one of these little rockets for some time myself and know what I'm getting into.

For new or inexperienced riders as well as those of us with tens of thousands of miles under our belt I thought I'd post this URL as a reminder. FAIR WARNING! This is quite graphic, I mean extremely graphic. This thread discusses and has pics of what happens when someone doesn't know what they're doing and does something over their head.

PLEASE ride Safely :D!

Whatdja get?

I haven't ridden my VFR800 much this season. I keep saying I'm going to sell it and turn it into some killer stereo gear (more likely a new kitchen floor ) but that never seems to happen! (anyone interested? Low miles, Hunterdon County, New Jersey)

As far as safety goes, let's not forget something very important to us - Earplugs, unless you have a really big fairing!

I have never seen such graphic warning.  I take either my sneakers, a mtb, my road bike or my car anyday, thank you.

The dude had no helmet in the accident.  I guess he thought he was superman, but found out quite the contrary.

i have two bikes, a '78 ducati darmah; & a '95 buell s2, w/a bit of mods to bring it up to present-day buell performance specs.  they were in storage for >3 years, & i yust got them out a coupla months ago.  i yust today stopped by the shop going thru my buell to make it street-ready again; it should be ready early next week.  then, i yust need the insurance & re-registering of the bikes before i can go riding again.

it's been awful, not being able to ride the past three years.  but, safety is a major concern for me.  being older, & having kids mebbe brings a bit of levity to the sport.  i never ride w/o full leathers, & gloves, even when the temps hover around 100.  i have fully-perforated pants & jacket that helps keep the heat down.  and, i never ride w/o a full-faced helmet either.  i remember riding w/shorts, t-shirt & flip-flops (tho i still wore a helmet), when i was a kid - insanity.  but, i was never a "squid", i always kinda took it easy.  those pics were quite gross...   :shake:

I'm a firm believer that you dress for the crash and not the weather. I always wear an approved jacket, gloves and boots no matter how hot it gets. I occasionally wear jeans instead of my leather pants but don't make a habit of it. All the time I see guys riding wearing shorts ,no shirt or gloves and either tennis shoes or in one case flip flops. It is no wonder that the medical profession refer to us riders as " organ donors". My ride at the moment is a Yamaha YZF600R.

One ER nurse I know refers to motorcycle riders as "job security"

I think it's funny how nearly all the bicyclist you see on the road wear helmets, and most of the motorcyclist don't.

Where do you live? In Oregon and Washington it's the law. Even the hardcore Harley owner's I know wouldn't go without a helmet even if it wasn't against the law.

I'm in NJ, but close to PA.

It's very rare to see a Hardly-Ableson rider wearing a helmet there.

I used to ride without a helmet, but a lady where I work was a passenger on her boyfriends bike and they had a nasty accident. I started wearing a helmet right after that.

Two weeks after I started wearing the helmet, I was hit by a kid in a Mitsubishi Eclipse...I hit the highway and slid at 60 MPH for quite a distance. My head was fine, lots of road rash, torn/bloody clothes, etc- but I healed up fine. My elbow bothers me a bit, but no big deal.

Today, I had a nice 100 mile ride.   :thumb:

There's two kinds of riders...those that have been down and those that are going.  Funny, I never believed that before my accident.  The other thing, ride like the cagers (car drivers) are trying to kill you....because they are!!!!  :icon_twisted:

I was just working in Lansdale PA for a few weeks and laughed at all the no helmet cool guy sport bike riders in unbuttoned short sleeved shirts, tennis shoes and shorts, even on the PA turnpike. At least they were all wearing eye protection 8) Here's a pic of my Shoei Nobby replica

I dont ride yet, but the guy in Michigan who sold me my Merkur Xr4Ti had 2 Ducati's....he raced them all the time at Grattan Raceway....he said he was only scared to ride in the street...

So when my riding days begin, I want some used Ducati.
