  • Dutch and Dutch 8C's…yes they are that good!
Looks like they are using a few different songs depending on which commerical they are running.

I think the Wilco/VW combination works well.

Yeah, I heard that too. Back in the day Wilco would have been branded as "sell outs" but I guess nowadays its par for the course. It still bothers me a little bit; I think mainly because the more I listen to Sky Blue Sky the more I like it. Somehow hearing a snipet on TV seems to cheapen my listening investment in the entire cd.

if an artist is to sell his art to a comercial concern, My God they should at least let us get a good association to the art before, its used for other things I have not even bought the damn thiong and I am thinking about Jetta's what the---------.

A friend of mine, not art inclined thinks of Steak when he hears Copeland!  :duh:,
but thats older music for sure and maybe one day he will get the real deal and listen to it. :o

mellencamp did it, sting did it, U2 did it all recently

mellencamp told Charlie Rose PBS- he did it cause he needed the $$ he's not on the seen anymore like in his hay day and said it gave him exposure he thought he needed.
Well I can kinda buy that, but mellencamp come on John that s just not the artist we came to know is it not easier to just fade and keep your core fans, whats wrong with that? you ain't that broke, I hope.

U2 its a disgrace and Sting to these guys are loaded (I will not have Budswisher sponse my visual art (F1 needs mega $$ they get sponcers thats normal),  U2 and friggin Sting superstars do not need sponcers what si up with dat.  And now Jeff Tweedy, do not tell Crazy Horse Neil he will go balistic

It used to be Memorial Stadium Fenway park next they will be the VW dome, the Chrysler Bowl and on and on, corporations got to pee on everything shameless endless promo, but artists OK 20 yrs later "After Midnight" no problem its good and with stands the test of time but do not stamp it before we even get to hear it

Why?

Maybe it doesn't bother me because I love Wilco and I am a German car fan as well?

I heard the other day also.  I was surprised but I don't really care.  What I am really jazzed about is going to see them two times in the next week!

Why do you think artists should have to hold themselves to some special standard when it comes to making a living?

I don't see why a snippet of a song should cheapen your listening experience.

VW's ad teak seems to incorporate music better than most in their commercials.  I still love the Cabriolet/Nick Drake commercial from years ago.

I don't know.  Funny thing is, I certainly dig Wilco AND I own a VW (Touareg).  I also think VW's ads are generally better than most, including the musical selections.  I guess early on I was influenced by the Neil Young "art for art's sake only" types ranting against commercialism in music and therefore, when I hear a portion of a song I really like being used to sell a product, it irritates me. :x  Not that I'm going to stop listening to Wilco, driving my VW, or watching TV.  :)

I love the Nick Drake/cabriolet commercial too.

Every time I see it I get the urge to do some 'shrooms and drive around. :thumb:
