Hello,

I made a posting to the Hagerman forum earlier about placement of turntable and phono preamp.  I happened to mention the close proximity of my TV set.

Jim Hagerman wondered if the degauss of a swtiching-on TV could have a detrimental effect on a MM cartridge.

My plan is to mount my new Rega P2 to a shelf, placed about six inches above and to the rear of my TV set.  I guess that would place the cartridge about 1 foot (maybe a little more) from the screen front of the TV.  There would be a wood shelf and the Rega plinth in between.

Could the TV cause deterioration of the Rega Bias2 MM cartridge?

But, if it were me, I would move the television as far away from the hi-fi system as possible. Like in another room. Really.

I would love to move the TV to another room.  That'll only happen when I have a new house that will give us a family (TV) room and library (music) room.

I did look at AudioAsylum, no-one seems to worry about cartridge effects, rather the question of dirty power supplies is the real cruncher.

TV's can give off high frequency sounds and noise that screws up the music...that's why I suggested to move it. (not trying to force you to buy a new house )

Seriously, at least try to re-arrange. The best thing I ever did to improve the sound of my system was to get it away from the TV.

My TV does a weird thing when the Ionoclast gets near it...     if the tv is on and i just get the tip of the anti-static device near it, i get a nasty shock in my hand and the Ionoclast audibly pops and crackles.  i sense the feeling that leaving it close for long might do some damage somewhere.

what's going on with this??   i don't ever spin vinyl with the tv on or even plugged in typically though.

interesting topic no doubt...  is it difft for CRT sets versus flat screens???  my set is 32" CRT.

Hmmmm.....as I suspected.

Anyway, my new Rega P2 and shelf combo work very well, although I swear that even with the TV off, I could see the MM and needle inscribing the NBC peacock on my prized vinyl 

Now I have to make a post about tracking weight.
