Cornet2 9-pin versus Octal ???
« on: 21 Jun 2007, 03:10 pm »
My parts, with the exception of tubes and sockets are on order for the Cornet2.

A short while ago, I read about people using a 6SN7 in pace of the 12AU7.

Is there any significant difference in sound between the two types?  Does the Octal version sound better?

Has anyone made a version with ALL octal tubes?

The reason for asking is that I have quite a number of decent 6SN7 tube types hanging around my projects drawer:

6SN7GTA - Sylvania
6SN7GTB - GE, Magnavox
12SX7 - JAN RCA
12SN7 - RCA

Mind you, I have been saving the pair of 12SX7's for coupling with a pair of 6SN7's in my Aikido preamp once I build a reliable 12VDC filament supply capable of punching out 2.4A - Off topic, but any ideas.

Thanks,
Charlie

You can build an octal version.  Although wiring up the sockets is a PITA.

JH,

Great schematic!  I'll have to investigate how this can be achieved when my PCB arrives.  However, considering the PITA you mention, I may simply investigate looking out for the best 9-pin tubes that I can afford, unless there's a clear reason why some of the octal tubes would be better.

It comes down to personal taste.  Some folks just happen to like 8-pin tubes better.  In general, the 9-pin tubes give more gain and are less prone to microphonics.  The 8-pins have more drive and perhaps less distortion.
