Known synergistic combinations?
« on: 20 Jun 2007, 07:33 pm »
I'm curious to see other people's responses to known combinations (amps + speakers) that have that special synergy about them that just make them sound special.

Perhaps they are systems that you know were used together in the voicing of the products or they are systems that you, and others, have used for years that just make that special combination that sounds sublime.

I'll start with:

1) Apogee Scintilla speakers being driven by Classe DR3 VHC power amps

Dared 2A3 SET amp and Spendor s6e speakers. Best combination I have ever had, and I have had a lot.

what music do you listen and how big is your room when you drive these spendors with 2w?

The Dared 2A3 actually puts out 7 watts. I listen to jazz and classical at moderate to low volumes and my room is around 12 by 13 with a fairly high ceiling. 11 o'clock is about the highest position on the volume knob I get to and that is plenty loud for me.

Ironlion - I have a Sony DVP-S7000 that I use as a transport and a Red Wine DAC that Vinnie made for me last August. It doesn't have a name or number and I'm not sure what is in it. It is extremely good sounding but the Altmann outshone it handily when it was here. Why do you ask?

Active speakers, end of discussion.

One amp per driver, selected by the manufacturer (who aught to know best and you are already trusting with the speaker design).  With a simple/direct load the amp can work much more effectively.  Its a boys to men comparison, not close, no contest.  It's what many professionals use in concert and in the studio.  Don't forget that most subwoofers are active.

Active speakers have flatter frequency response, much greater dynamics, and unbelievable bass extension.

I've written this before, but it was an ephiphany for me to compare Paradigm Studio 20 and Paradigm Active 20 speakers (same drivers/cabinet).  Audiophile bystanders were literally slack-jawed.  The Active 20s had the same bass extension as the Paradigm medium sized floorstanding Studio 80s for the same price, but flatter response, more dynamic, and of course included the amps.

A special case is single driver speakers.  By default they're active which helps explain why they can do as well as they do.

I've never heard active speakers that were terribly impressive.

Putting the amp in the box with a woofer that'll be sure to shake the shit out of it constantly has some drawbacks.  Oh yeah - and it's a cheap chip amp as well.  There might be power and dynamics, but not a lot else.  IMHO based on what I've heard.  (I can't recall brands but they were not cheap.)

Active amping - with active xover or single-driver with *no* xover - that's where it's at.  As you note.

I would say any single fullrange driver transmission line speaker +  a medium powered op chip amp (a la Gaincard.)  The combo, depending of the driver will give you slam that many might have associated with megawatt amplifiers and 1/2 ton speakers.

Sounds like we've come back around to Zu and Red Wine. And the consensus seems to be that passive crossover networks are best avoided. Did I read you correctly?
