I replaced a solid state Marchand XM44-3way with a Marchand XM126-3way.  The improvement is not subtle.  There is just much more layers and depth from the same recordings.  It's a classic case of not knowing what you are missing until you hear the difference.  The sound stage at least doubled in depth giving me more clue to the location of instruments relative to the voice.  The real big difference is in the tones.  Can you say PHAT? The notes are layered with harmonics that I had not heard before.  Every note is more robust and layered.  Mid range is thick and juicy making the female voice sexy and sultry.  The highs effortlessly soars and trills with just the right decay that lingers to put a smile on your face.  Bass is more solid giving the music a good foundation to build on.  The music is just so succulent you want to bite it.  I just can't quite describe the improvement in words.  Let me give you a visual metaphor.

With the XM44 I was listening to Twiggy.

With XM126, I am listening to Jane Mansfield.  aa

Need I say anymore?

Very visual comparison  :green: Are you using a SS or tube preamp (just curious) -- looked at your system description but don't know what those are.

I have Modwright SWLP in the system right now which is a tubed preamp.  I am going to experiment with Squeezebox direct to XM 126 to see what it's like without a pre.  I want to try a TVC or some other passive preamp to check out the possibilities in that way.  This is a real eye (ear) opener and I haven't even tried rolling tubes.  There are 14 Sovtek 12AX7s in there right now.  Eventually, I would like to get the Teles in at least the input and the high output sections if not all.  Good thing is that I don't have to look for matched tubes according to the designer, Phil Marchand.  Will save me some bucks.   Isn't it fun playing with new toys?  :thumb:

Good for you, woodsyi  :thumb:

Man, you're really dating yourself using those models as your pictorial

Half the guys here probably never heard of either.

I guess more current examples would be Calista Flockhart

and Diane Lane.

I know which one I prefer.
BTW, this is not a gratuitous showing of pretty girls on an audio forum.  This is all about equipment comparison.  :green:

Definitely try a passive! You should have plenty of gain from the Marchand. Good luck!

Here is the information.  You can order as kit or assembled.  http://www.marchandelec.com/xm126.html
You can also monitor Audiogon for a used unit to come up.  It sells pretty quickly when it does.
