Hagclock on Oppo DV-970HD?
« on: 6 Jun 2007, 09:13 pm »
Hello!  I built a Hagclock a while back for my Music Hall CD25.  I really liked the results.  The laser in my CD25 went south.  I am debating whether to spend $200 to fix the CD25 or buy an Oppo DV-970HD and try to install my Hagclock.  Has anyone modded the Oppo with good results?  Will the Hagclock work with and upgrade this unit?  $150 new and it plays every format.  Thanks for any feedback.  Peace.  Robert

I looked into this but the Hag clock only works up to 20Mhz and the Oppo needs a 27mhz clock.  I'm seriously thinking about trying the Burson clock which is available at 27Mhz.  With the current US - Aus dollar exchange rate, the Burson clock comes in at around $100 US.  I just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Thanks  Russ!  I always need someone smarter than myself to sort these details out.  What mods have you done to your Oppo and to what effect?  Peace.  Robert

Hi Robert,

I posted my initial mod attempts in this thread over in the Lab.

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=40543.0

Here's what has changed since that original post.  I've removed the transformers as they added too much noise when I turned up the gain on my preamp.  I've added .1uf polypropylene bypass caps to the two 10uf power supply filter caps next to the DAC.  I've added .22uf PIO (paper in oil) bypass caps to the 11uf ERSE coupling caps.  The Oppo now sounds very clean, clear and detailed.  I've done the same output stage mods to my SB3 with similar excellent results.

The only caveate to this mod approach is that the output still needs a good preamp or buffer stage with gain to work right.

I hope this helps.

So the Hagclock is an option for the Oppo.  That's good to know.  Thanks.

Yes, you can get a HAGCLOCK to run at 27MHz.  I had optimized the circuit around 16M, but it still runs ok at the higher rate.  Duty cycle is a little off (not quite 50%).  The circuit board is a great platform upon which to experiment.  The MAX913 runs a little faster than the LT1016, so you can swap.  Some folk use just the regulator portion and leave off the oscillator - makes a great low noise supply for other audio circuits.

Now that you mention it, maybe I should add the 27M option...

Hello Jim!  I think I will pick up an Oppo and play with it.  What parts do I need to swap out on my Hagclock to change it to 27MHz?  Thanks for the mod suggestions Russ!  Peace.  Robert

Leave out the 10pF cap, change the inductor to 3.9uH.  Use 27M xtal.
